Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joseph Lopodi Gaza. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joseph Lopodi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Pigeon City Productions is a brand I’ve been working on since college. From my first couple of years performing with other artists in Cape Town, South Africa. I wanted to build a brand that could help support artists in the city as a label and agency. Allowing them to have more platforms to perform, whether it is live or on social media platforms. I came across a lot of artists with potential as I grew in Cape Town, and the one thing we had in common was that there weren’t enough platforms for all of us to showcase our talents. So I decided to build a bridge for all of us.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
PIgeon City Productions focuses on artistic innovation. The brand is all about giving light to artistic works that might still be stuck in the grey area. I know what it’s like to have the potential for more but not have the right support to get you over the finish line. Whether it’s financial or perspective the brand’s main focus is to make sure to manage you down the right path of growth and positivity. Many artists start an artistic journey with no blueprint, so ‘Pigeon City’ helps you map out the goals you’ll have to achieve in order for you to have a successful artistic career.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
For the first few shows I put together, I used the money made from my first few college jobs. I booked a venue and put together a list of various artists that would perform that night. It was meant to be the kick-off night for the brand. So I used the money I made from the field event jobs I was working at the time and some of my allowance cash to top it off and put everything together. The first night turned a profit, though it didn’t carry over to the next night. The brand came to light in 2019 and has been fighting to stay on its feet for the last 4 years. But it’s a positive bounce back anytime we came across a hurdle.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I remember when I set up for the second show and I had most of the artists I had listed for drop me a couple of days before the show, and all the colleagues I had trusted to help sell tickets came back to me on show night saying they couldn’t get anyone to come see the show. That day I realized how much work it would take to have the right management handling public relations, but also how much work it would take to build and motivate the right creative-minded team that will help carry the brand and manage anyone else looking for direction. I knew I would have to carry the load but I was prepared to do it.
