We were lucky to catch up with Joseph Kincaid recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joseph, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I had to start things I’d over I’d do almost everything differently. I opened my business when I was 21 years old, and at that age one has surely yet not matured enough to probably operate a business. If I could start over knowing everything I know NOW, I think I could get to where I am in 1-2 years, instead of almost 9. I would’ve saved myself a lot of time, money, and heartache.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
No Limits Nutrition Center is a business and brand revolving around helping people become the best versions of themselves. We are a sports nutrition supplement store at our core, and we also sell protein shakes and smoothies, but every decision we make is centered around wether it can or can not help our customers get better. We obviously mostly help them with things pertaining to fitness, and health, but we also help make sure they understand the positive impact on their mental health as well.
We offer so many things at absolutely no cost, that other businesses sometimes have as their core offer. We go above and beyond to try and provide the most value for our customers as we possibly can. Our goal is to become the best in the world at what we do, and that’s helping people get real results.
Have you ever had to pivot?
For the first 6 years we were in business we strictly just sold supplements. Years 3,4, and 5 for us were brutally hard, and it was no ones fault but our own. In 2021 we decided that it would be a good idea to start selling protein shakes and smoothies to try and get people in the store for a lower cost offer, and then show how we can help them in other ways with our products. It was a lot of work logistically to turn a retail store into a retail/restaurant (technically) but if we hadn’t done it we would not of grown almost 300% since then, in just a few shorts years.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I mentioned in the last question the hard years we had, they were from mid 2017 until early 2020. Those years were lucky to see 3 or 4 customers in a day. There multiple days where we’d see zero customers in a month. Our store couldn’t reorder inventory and pay bills. There were multiple times where I was so close to throwing in the towel, but I never did. Almost 3 years of that is brutal, and it was the hardest 3 years of my life. I had to work a second job at night (totaling and additional 25-30 hours per week) on top of the 60 hours per week I was working inside my business, just to people able to survive.
