Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joseph House. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Joseph thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I graduated chiropractic school in December of 2017, thinking I had a plan. As we all know, plans don’t always go as planned! I was an associate doctor at an office in my hometown for five years when I decided that I wanted to start my own practice. I had a different vision for how I wanted to serve my community. I wanted to get away from a pain management style office, and start focusing on improving the health of my people for the rest of their life!
Starting your own practice takes a lot of preparation and planning. There is no winging it when it comes to starting a business. You must have a clear vision of where you want to go, and how you plan on getting there. There is a lot of trial and error along the way, and sometimes it takes months, or even years to work out the kinks until you have a business that can operate in the most smooth and efficient way.
My advice to someone that is looking to start their own practice would be to find a mentor that has done it before. Find a practice that operates in the same capacity and way that you hope to one day resemble. Look at all the small details and intricacies of how they work and how they have become successful. It doesn’t happen overnight. Tiny details make for smooth operations. Prepare for every scenario that you may encounter.
If you are practicing and operating with the best of intentions, honesty, and focusing on results, success will follow. The best advice I can give is to do everything for the right reasons and do it with respect and honesty for your people.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up playing football and baseball and my mom was a Doctor of Nursing. Through some minor aches and pains, she had recommended that I see our local chiropractor. After having great success as a patient, I learned to love the process and everything that Chiropractic had to offer. I started to research the profession and shadow as much as possible to learn the day-to-day life of being a chiropractor. At 15 years old, I knew that I was going to be a Chiropractor.
Chiropractic is amazing! We are able to get amazing results with our people. We love seeing people get out of pain, but that’s not why we do what we do. It’s the life changes that motivate us. Hearing how someone is able to sleep in the same bed with their spouse again, get on the floor with their grandkids, get off the pain medication they have been on for years, avoid that surgery, play golf again. Those are the outcomes we love!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I always treated the chiropractic adjustment like it was a surgery. One adjustment and you should see results. That’s just not how the body works. Injuries happen quickly, but healing takes time. Don’t think of chiropractic care like a surgery. Think of it as a gym membership. You don’t exercise on Monday and lose weight after one workout. It takes time and consistency. But the results are worth it.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
People can sense when you are not being authentic. When you are in healthcare, results and respect are the two most important things. People are coming to you for results, and you have to be able to deliver that. Treat each person with the respect and love. Make every experience at your office a great one!
