Joseph, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
Would have indulge more in short films to improve my technical skills, from cinematography to directing, sound design, and editing. This involves continuous learning, practice, and collaboration with other skilled filmmakers both within and outside of Africa could have enhanced my senses and vision in story telling.
Also to emphasize on authentic African narratives, delving into the rich cultural, historical, and contemporary contexts of the continent, its people, and their experiences. This would involve a deep understanding of the diverse cultures and traditions across Africa, and a commitment to representing them truthfully and respectfully.
Lastly would have prioritize understanding the business side of filmmaking, including financing, distribution, and marketing. This is crucial for ensuring that the stories I aim to tell reach a wide audience.

Joseph, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my journey in the creative industry as a writer, which eventually led me into the world of filmmaking. While working closely with experienced filmmakers across various departments, I discovered my deep passion for directing and cinematography.
I dedicated substantial time as an assistant to seasoned industry professionals, absorbing knowledge and honing my skills in the craft. This hands-on experience paved the way for me to transition into roles as a cinematographer for films and documentaries.
In 2014, I took a significant step forward by venturing into directing with my debut film “Apocalypse,” marking my entry into the film industry. Following this successful debut, I found myself in demand, working with production houses as a Director of Photography and Director, and also collaborating with NGOs on various projects.
Traveling across African countries, whether by road or air, has been a cherished hobby of mine for years. However, it wasn’t until 2015 in Ghana that my passion for exploring the continent took on a new dimension. While there, I had the serendipitous encounter with an A-list actress from Sierra Leone. She shared captivating images of her homeland, igniting a deep curiosity within me to experience Sierra Leone firsthand.
In 2016, I finally embarked on the journey to Sierra Leone and was immediately captivated by the country’s stunning landscapes and the warm hospitality of its people. I was particularly struck by the vibrant spirit of the local actors, their passion for storytelling evident in every performance. This experience fueled an overwhelming zeal within me, inspiring the creation of the script for “Ropoli”.
Producing “Ropoli” was a labor of love that demanded unwavering dedication. With Zainab Sillah as the producer and lead actress, we navigated the challenging process of bringing the script to life. Zainab played a crucial role in assembling the perfect cast through meticulous auditions, ensuring that the essence of the story was authentically portrayed on screen.
One of the most formidable challenges we faced during the production was shooting in local dialects such as Temne, Mende, and Mandingo. However, with the guidance of skilled dialect coaches, we overcame linguistic barriers, ensuring that the authenticity of the narrative was preserved. Their expertise was invaluable in maintaining the production’s integrity and my sanity on set.
Through the trials and triumphs of creating “Ropoli”, I discovered not only the beauty of Sierra Leone but also the resilience and passion of its people. This journey of cultural immersion and creative collaboration has been both transformative and enriching, epitomizing the profound connection between travel, storytelling, and the human experience.
Ropoli made an indelible mark as a beacon of cinematic excellence, earning awards, and recognition globally. Since its release in 2017, it has set a new standard for storytelling and visual quality. Participating in 18 film festivals, as well as multiple award wins, has solidified its position as a benchmark for outstanding filmmaking within Sierra Leone and beyond.
Following my work with various production houses and NGOs across Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Benin, I directed the groundbreaking TV series “INTERTWINE” in 2018. Produced by Zainab Sillah, this series provided a fresh narrative perspective, capturing the hearts and minds of audiences.
Notably, I directed “Bomposeh,” produced by Aminata Kabba, also contributed to the growing diversity and quality of Sierra Leonean cinema. However, in 2021 i directed “Where Lies the Truth” that truly captivated audiences, becoming the most talked-about film in Sierra Leone. The movie attained significant industry recognition, securing four awards, including Best Script, Lead Role, Original Score, and Director, and continued to impress at eight ongoing film festivals.
My contributions to the film industry have not only bolstered the reputation of Sierra Leonean cinema but have also showcased the rich storytelling and acting talents present in the region. Through my dedication and innovative storytelling, i have significantly impacted the trajectory of filmmaking not only in Sierra Leone but also across the African continent. i can directly say, my filmmaking career pivoted because of my journey in Sierra Leone.
The discipline I cultivated throughout my journey has been instrumental in shaping me as a filmmaker. It taught me the importance of meticulous planning, perseverance in the face of challenges, and the art of storytelling through visuals.
As a filmmaker, I offer a range of services including directing, cinematography, and production expertise for films, documentaries, and creative projects. I strive to bring a unique perspective to my work, solving complex visual and storytelling challenges for my clients.
What sets me apart is my commitment to pushing creative boundaries, attention to detail in crafting compelling visuals, and a deep understanding of the power of storytelling. I take pride in my ability to collaborate effectively with clients and teams, bringing visions to life on screen.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that my work is a reflection of my passion for storytelling through the lens of a camera. I aim to create visually stunning and emotionally resonant experiences that leave a lasting impact on audiences. Whether it’s through directing, cinematography, or production, I aspire to elevate every project I am involved in and deliver exceptional results that speak for themselves.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
