We recently connected with Joseph Dieuvil and have shared our conversation below.
Joseph, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Early in your career, how did you think through the decision of whether to start your own firm or join an established firm?
When I first started out, I worked as a general counsel for a music licensing, publishing and multimedia company. I wanted to work as a lawyer in the music business and it was a great opportunity for me to learn fast. I think it was a good choice for a limited time, yes. I studied law at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Although I was in Florida, I knew I needed to find work in NY or LA, where the major music hubs are. During law school, I interned for Broadcast Music Inc (BMI) and was hired by the music company before I graduated law school.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
During my internship at BMI, I helped families of deceased songwriters and publishers obtain unpaid royalties from their loved ones. Once I began working at the music company, I helped the executives in the company navigate music contract matters (ie recording agreements, publishing agreements, synchronization agreements, music compilation agreements, royalties, etc).
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I started working as an IP lawyer in the music business pretty young (At the age of 25). Since I was a young black attorney in the business, I think it was easier for me to obtain a connection with creatives as I looked like many of them to be honest.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Many clients find me on social media or through state sponsored legal referral services. But the best source of new clients is from former or current client referrals.
