We recently connected with Joseph Crenshaw and have shared our conversation below.
Joseph, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
So it all started around 2018… I was making a little money here and there within my business but not taking it seriously (I became a manager at Autozone at the time and was feeling myself). My mom [Sandra A. Boyd-Crenshaw] was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer late that year. Mostly fell into depression at that time and just put most of my focus on her as best I could. When the new year of 2020 rolled in, my mother’s illness took a turn for the worse – she ultimately passed on Feb. 20, 2020. From that moment from now on, I learned things about my parents that I never took the time to understand…
My parents were a decent middle-class family and took care of me and my youngest sister very well, what I didn’t know was that their financials were not adequate for my mother’s untimely passing. As a result, my dad, my sister, and myself all fell into financial ruin in a matter of 6 months.
My business falls into the realm of FINANCIAL SERVICES where we help people, regardless of background, race, or religion, and put them on the path of success in Financial Literacy. My mission, or “My Why” as I like to call it, is to make sure people who know my name never go through what I went through in my own life. I wanna help others win in the money game and show that learning simple concepts that can not only save time but heartache from the unexpected. I never want anyone to experience the pain I did.
Joseph, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the Financial Services Industry about a decade ago at that time I had 3 jobs and an apartment – The only time I saw my own place was when I was sleeping!!! So obviously I needed to do something different, a friend of mine showed me the opportunity and I took it.
The services I provide are:
– Financial Planning
– Insurance (Life, Auto, Home, Renters)
– Investments
– Home Security (Vivint)
– Senior Healthcare
– Identity Protection
– Legal Counsel
– Credit Repair
Basically, anything that involves money I can do my very best to save you a dollar or two!
What separates me from the pack is that I’m what you may call the “unorthodox” financial guy. I’m rarely in a suit unless I have to. I want my clients to know I’m an everyday, ordinary person just like them. In a world saturated by AI, I want to bring authenticity to my brand so that way if they want to be where I am, they can do it too!!! At the end of the day, I’m not this perfect guru when it comes to this but I will give my absolute best in all that I do.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Perfectionism!!!
So a backstory about my life, I have significant Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, (OCD) things have to be in a certain order for me to be productive. I really had to unlearn a lot of things because I was taught in some way if it’s not perfect, it’s not right (I kinda blame my attempt at my Computer Science degree for this). I have learned over the years that every single thing does not have to be perfect and it is okay to make mistakes in life. The most important lesson is to learn from those mistakes to make the best version of yourself!!!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
A couple of books I know really impacted my life was Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. It really helped me get through my depression when my mother passed and helped me control my mind in many ways. Plus he was very raw and authentic with the things he went through in his very own life so I definitely appreciate him for sharing his story. Another book I like is by Dr. Billy Alsbrooks (I hope I spelled his name right) called Blessed and Unstoppable! I actually stumbled on him via YouTube, I was listening to his motivational videos because they felt like church sermons to me during COVID because we were unable to go to church around that time. He was promoting his book that was coming out and I was one of the preorders. I got a picture of him and his autograph as well so I appreciated him for what he was doing as well.
