Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joselyne Ortega. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joselyne, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Hair is my second career. I was a professional hip hop dancer during my first career. In the dance community, specifically the hip hop and breakdancing dancers give nicknames based on dance style. My mentor gave me the name Jawz. Mainly because I was very embarrassedly shy but when it was time to perform I out performed under pressure. Fast forward during my phase out, I was transitioning into becoming a full time hairstylist and didn’t want to be limited by just mastering one technique over another as I knew eventually i would be exploring all avenues of the girls so I kept the name Jawz and called my company “ByJawz” as I knew it would be like a book with many chapters attached to it as my career would unfold.
Joselyne, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up to both parent Dual-Licensed hair stylist and barbers. Growing up in a unisex salon always gave me an overall creative space to develop in as I seen client after client come in and leave transformed. I never though in a million years I’d actually be doing have as a profession as it was a way for me to save some money on doing my own hair overall, but mainly the convenience that came with being able to save a couple dollars in hair services when I’d have to have my hair done for dance shows and events. I started my dance journey very young and began my professional career at 16 years old under a versatile street style dance company called “United roots” company based out in Boston, Ma. There I learned everything I’ve embodied in my life’s work today. Long hours of work, overtime training to execute and deliver at top level, work ethic, how to show up for practice vs work events, communication, leadership, integrity, consistency and overall delivery. Due to that early level of commitment and training; I now run a local small Business by the name of “ByJawz LLC” in which we specialize in Unisex hair care and hair recovery services (trichology/hairloss), from color, to cuts, to advance hairstyles. we’ve had the honor of becoming a global traveling service by request as we’ve gained a wide range of celebrity and high profile cliental over the last coming year. We also provide a series of concoction hair products made to cater the on-going clients we attend too, all while further expanding our services to our sister branch “ByJawzEDU” which is our network platform we use to educate through hair, entrepreneurship and business to our community through, events, community engagements, classes, workshops, trainings, coaching and more. All these things wouldnt have been possible without the character of the 16 year old me. Many people will tell you its motivation, inspiration, even determination. But character development goes light years before us, and the lack of will keep you from walking into doors you were suppose to walk through gracefully. I’m grateful for all those who gave me the time and space to practice and evolve my skill set to invoke a deeper passion and technique that open doors for me today.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Manage your heart and you’ll master your mind. Many folks get into business for all the wrong reasons and it’s super important you understand your own reasonings because once money, emotions and expansion take lead as the business grows, without a clear grounding and understanding with the difference on what’s personal verse business – you will trailer that back to the company. I leave everything at the door and when I clock in it’s all about the work and execution. I also developed atstem, polices and procedures in place to protect all parties involve. My model is higher slower, fire faster no exceptions- and slowly implement as the company grows and is in need of it.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Integrity, consistency and communication are the three words that define our brand culture. We want to make the integrity is always at the forefront, the consistency in delivery and overall experience behind and out of the chair is in accordance to our mission and vision as a brand, and that the communication and transparency always be taken with high regard. The key to keeping the reputation in a market is having your own character at high regard so you are consistently the same person in your personal life and business life. Two different people will result into different outcomes which is why most companies don’t last. It’s a lot of sacrifice, perseverance and resilience to keep that flow going and growing, and when clients understand the brand power they are buying into, purchaseing and investing into, and that the value on their return outweighs there worries and concerns, they you have provided an experience for the client and market that keeps them coming on back.
