We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jose Santos. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jose below.
Alright, Jose thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
When my daughter started to get more involved with singing/acting/modeling, we got to know people in the industry. We met many others pursuing their passions as DJs, Producers, and performers while working a day job. However, my daughter was the only one with a website because I’m the Web Developer who built it for her.
I started Santos Web Technologies because I realized that there was a demographic of people who might need or want a website but might not have the typical budget to afford the cost of hiring a web development company to build and maintain their site for them. Or perhaps they have the budget to use a DIY solution like one of these major website builders, but they don’t have the time or skill to build and maintain a decent-looking website, never mind connecting things to blogs/stores and embedded media.
So I created an alternative solution to help these people establish their web presence as they build their businesses and careers without worrying too much about the high cost and complexity typically associated with web development.
Jose, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I essentially taught myself Web Development and applied to hundreds of jobs until someone hired me as a junior developer. Ten years and many contract jobs later, I work as a Front End Developer during the day and a Small Business Owner at night.
I specialize in creating affordable, professional websites tailored to the needs of small businesses, small organizations, and individuals such as rising artists, independent producers, directors, and performers. So instead of paying thousands of dollars for web development services or dealing with the nuances of trying to do it yourself, I build and manage your site for you saving you time and money.
I’m most proud of helping Rob Lacy who runs Manifest Academy here in Las Vegas, which is a non-profit that provides free music industry related training and experience to students age 6-18. I worked him to build the website for his non-profit which will hopefully assist in their growth and their community outreach. Interview him next!
My goal is to use my knowledge and skills to make a positive impact in the world. If I can do that through this medium, then I would be happy to. So if you are a rising star in the film/music industry or a small organization or business owner, then reach to me at santosweb.tech and let’s create something amazing together.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In my previous life, I was a FItness Trainer. I studied and received my Bachelors degree in Kinesiology. I worked as some type of Trainer/Coach for over a decade. So that was my life and had spent quite of lot of time, money and effort building it. But the time came when that career was no longer compatible with my personal life. Trying to be a dad and training clients at all hours of the day was become increasingly challenging. So I knew I had to find another path. After a couple years of trying other things, I started to teach myself Web Development while working odd jobs and parenting. Ultimately that led to working full time as a Front End Engineer and things couldn’t have turned out better.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Leaving the Fitness world that I knew was difficult and uncomfortable. I didn’t quickly land on web development. I spent about 3 years taking intro college classes for different career paths, failing tests for real estate licensing (I learned I perform poorly when I’m not really interested), and working different gig jobs. Even when I finally got my first web developer job, that contract ended after a year.
At so many points along the way, I felt like a major failure and that I had wasted all my time but (sometimes after a long mental break) I forced myself to keep trying until the next opportunity presented itself. One contract after the other, I learned and earned a little more and I can say I’m so happy to kept pushing to get here today.
