We recently connected with Jose Luis Gonzalez and have shared our conversation below.
Jose Luis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I’m a self-taught illustrator and transitioned into film while in college. I didn’t intend on returning to illustration but as luck would have it I began to fuse my film work with illustration and have since worked steadily on animation projects, To be clear, I still only do hand illustration and work with an animating partner who does the computer end of things. I also edit and occasionally write.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My illustrations aren’t everybody’s cup of tea, so most of my clients already know what they’re getting in to, That said, I can illustrate in a few different styles when requested, though there’s definitely a look I naturally gravitate towards which is 70’s era underground comics and early MAD Magazine.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It sounds pretty basic but honestly being able to imagine something and then bring it to life never fails to amaze me. Especially if you’re collaborating with someone who may be struggling in getting their message across. To come in and help them find a voice is very rewarding.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I feel that the arts as a whole in this country are seen as a hobby and not to be taken seriously. Also, people that come from modest backgrounds have a lot of barriers to enter the field where, unfortunately, more already affluent people tend to find more success/sustainability. Affordable housing and education (and healthcare!) are fundamental to all people, but especially creatives and especially those from marginalized communities.
