We recently connected with Jose Chavez and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jose , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The idea for the little plant shop came a from a sudden interest in plants. I bought a snake plant and the rest is history. At the time the idea started brewing in my head I was working as a cosmetologist, although i loved what I was doing. I loved my plants a little more. When COVID hit I started to notice the sudden interest in plants. We had a few nurseries in town, but not an actual house plant shop. It started from a small pop up at Shade cafe in Richland, Washington. The tremendous support we received from the local plant community (yes that’s a thing lol) was more than I could’ve ever imagined. After our first pop up I started to get invites to more. I was booked them every weekend, and still doing hair during the week. Although it did become overwhelming at times, I managed to balance both out as we started to gain more attention from everybody, even non plant lovers. Soon after We decided it was time to establish our roots in town. A few weeks later we found our brick and mortar for the little plant shop. Now Almost 4 years later, it was the best decision we ever made.
Jose , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
If you asked me 5 years ago what I’d be doing going into 2025, the answer would definitely not be owning a plant shop. It’s weird how much influence a snake plant in a strangers house on instagram can have on you. From casually scrolling, seeing the plant, procedimg to Lowe’s to buy one. And now I own a plant shop. 4 years later we not only sell plants and pots and really cute plant accessories. We offer home and office plant styling services, plant care, repotting services and much more. If it has to do with houseplants, the little plant shop is the place to call.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media I feel has really put us out there in the community. Since day one I’ve been active on all the platforms, posting pictures of plants, pots, new shipments almost daily. I don’t want our followers to just be our followers, I want them to engage with us on social media, even if they’ve never been to the shop. I’ll occasionally upload non plant related content and it’s been a hit with our audience. My advice for anyone struggling with social media presence is don’t let them forget about you. Post consistently, even on the days you don’t want to. Somebody will see it.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I haven’t done this journey alone, my husband. Whose name is also jose, has been my biggest supporter since day one. From surprising me with the business license, working overtime to buy our first shipment of plants/pots. And even unclogging the bathroom sink, because of course I thought washing the soil from a plants roots was a good idea. The little plant shop wouldn’t be if it wasn’t for his support.
