We were lucky to catch up with Jose Cervantes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jose , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents gave me the right tools and values to become the person that I am know, they allowed me to make mistakes without judgement and kept supporting me and allowing me to be my true self.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born in San Diego California, but grew up in Tijuana, Mexico my first langauge is Spanish, coming from a family of Singers and Artists I grew up being involved in the arts my whole life, Always singing at schools festivals and participating in plays and always having input in everything that involved being creative, at the age of 15 I was part of a Boy Band named “Kumano”where we toured in different cities from our region and participated in various events and tv shows, after being in the Band I did some local singing contests and also did modeling on the side since fashion has been an important part of who I am, at the age of 21 around 2005 I was part of a singing competition and reality show on Telemundo where I did not made it too far, this made me go into a deep depression making it hard to believe in myself and basically giving up on my singing career, but like any artist the need of showing your talent always comes back. So I started with some singing competitions here and there until In my late twenties I was part of a collective of artist in the underground jazz scene in Tijuana called “8 voces y un piano” where we did at least 3 seasons and also was part of the musical “Canciones de Almodóvar” and “Back to the 80’s” all these with the same collective. I also experienced opening concerts for artists like Juan Gabriel in Valle de Guadalupe and being a finalist at “Tengo talento, Mucho Talento” a talent show transmitted on Estrella tv, all off this of course combined with modeling and my deep love for fashion as well at the same time I have always done social work in the non profit work specially on the fight of ending homelessness!! Recently I’ve been signed with San Diego Model management agency and Newbook Models and have walked on different Fashion shows and worked for different brands. I’m also a DJ! I have played for events like “church of Music” and “Art at the envy” my focus in music is also Art as Fashion events I believe everything is connected ! My purpose is to continue Influencing Positively through my social media, my music, singing and fashion and spreading awareness about mental health and self empowerment, gender equality and HOPE!!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have always tried to be authentic and keep it as reel as possible, even though is hard, because even though social media is truly, and only a small part of who you are, I always try to be as real as possible and also to give content of quality positivity and love.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
While growing up, I was so scared of failure, but one thing that I learned is that failure is necessary. Failure is what keeps us going, and what makes us learn and grow. I had to learn with time that there’s nothing I can do to change the course of some thing that it’s supposed to happen, so the only thing that I could always do is to get up and continue no matter how bad or how difficult of a lesson could be.
