We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful JOSE CARLOS VELAYARSE. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with JOSE CARLOS below.
JOSE CARLOS, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
It is very difficult at the beginning, many things can happen around you that don’t allow you to keep growing, I think the key to getting ahead with your artistic work is to be persistent and not be afraid to try many times. In the beginning, you will need a lot of work. But the day will come when you will get the results and no one will be able to stop you. All of us who dedicate ourselves to art must have that perseverance to make a living from our art.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am passionate about music and colors, I am currently working on research about abstract painting and Latin Jazz.
Since I was a child I have been curious about painting, with time I have learned to organize myself and to understand that it is a long way to go, I am a painter and a musician. I am looking for a way to balance myself in these two forms of expression.
Something that characterizes me as an artist is my strong link to color and its musical aspects. Particularly with Latin Jazz.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Being an artist is a long road, often with difficulties that society itself imposes on us. I think it is a job for everyone, not only for artists. I am from Peru and in my country it is very difficult to get ahead through art.
In my case, I have had to leave my country to look for better opportunities in art. It is a challenge to leave your comfort zone and find a way to survive in another country.
I am currently living in Vienna and I can say that it is a city that offers many opportunities.
I am very happy with the experience I am living, this allows me to move forward.
I am very aware that not everyone has the facility to be able to leave and emigrate to another country.
Maybe that is the big difference, we should all be able to leave and move around the world, looking for professional improvements, and not have to suffer the difficulties imposed by a state.
I hope that at some point borders will end and we can all be citizens of the world.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There are two books that marked me:
The first, The Cardboard House, by Martin Adam, is a lovely book that helped me to broaden my surrealistic and expressive thoughts.
The second is Point and Line in the Plane, by Vasili Kandinsky. The romantic and idealized theory, allowed me to question myself and to know the research side from an artistic point of view.
But besides those books, records like Dizzy Gillespie’s Manteca and Ray Barreto’s Acid have marked my creative process.
