We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jose Canales. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jose below.
Jose , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Am I happy being an artist? Of course. Do I wonder what it would be like to have a regular job?
No, because I’m still neck-deep in other fields. I currently have 2.9 degrees (a semester away from my third one). Art, Business Administration, and Data Analytics. The part that I find the most satisfying when looking back, is that no matter what field I’m in I have never stopped creating art. My current thesis deal with computer vision, basically how to analyze logos based on visual features such as “symmetry” or “color”. My point is that no matter what field Im currently in I always seem to try to link it back to art. This makes me a proponent of the idea that even if someone has a “regular job” there is always room for an artistic link to be created. EVEN if outside the job. There is no ” I don’t have time anymore”, just grab a pen and sketch on a napkin.

Jose , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My professional life has been a rollercoaster. But I think that the most interesting part about it is the sheer variety of skills I have gathered throughout the years. Im a screen printer, graphic designer, video editor, and business administrator, and know quite a bit about machine learning. Simply put, I’m proud of the fact that if someone asks me “Hey can you screen print of wood, and then create a program that can analyze that print mathematically through a camera?”, I would answer with a “Oh yeah, I did that last summer”. People are scared of diversifying. I understand that sometimes you apply for a job expecting to do a specific task, and that is ok to some extent. But, if your attitude is ” that’s not in my job description” you will never learn new skills.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Some things are not that important. It might seem like the end of the world today, but in a year it will be insignificant.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Relaxation. Hours can pass and it doesn’t feel like it. You might be focused but your mind still feels like its resting.
