We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jorge Vina a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jorge, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The story began a few years ago when I dedicated myself to web design and development for medium and small-sized businesses. Our goal was to create a business model that would simplify website creation for both ourselves and our clients. To achieve this, we began selling simple websites as small packages with corresponding templates. This approach allowed our clients to have a website without incurring high costs, while also allowing us to save time.
However, after a while, it became apparent that the model was not receiving the expected acceptance. As a result, we transformed it into a subscription model, where we offered hosting, website design, and management for a monthly fee. Despite minimal marketing costs, this model began to produce promising results.
Now, we are at a stage where we are re-launching the final platform (after its beta version). The platform will enable individuals with no knowledge of WordPress, hosting, or web design to create a professional-looking website by themselves.
The idea behind this concept is to simplify website management so that small business owners can focus on growing their businesses instead of dealing with technical issues. By providing an accessible and easy-to-use platform, we aim to appeal to a wide range of small business owners who seek an affordable and efficient website management solution.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
At the beginning of my journey, I had limited knowledge of how the online world operated despite having completed my Master’s in International Marketing. I had been working in London for various companies involved in retail, food supply, and import. However, I made the decision to quit my job and start working for myself. As I could work from anywhere in the world, I returned to my home country, Spain, and began developing sites and platforms for international clients I had met during my stay in London.
The first few years were challenging as projects did not always come when I needed them, and sometimes, they came without solicitation. The unpredictability of the situation necessitated that I remain prepared, whether or not I had work for the next three months.
Eventually, I started partnering with other agencies in Spain, which aided me in acquiring more projects while I worked on the final version of the platform I had mentioned previously – Wiblion. After two years of unwavering dedication, we are set to launch the platform just before summer 2023.
What sets Wiblion apart from other website management services is our emphasis on affordability and accessibility. We believe that small businesses should have access to professional-looking websites, regardless of their budget or technical knowledge.
The positive feedback we received from our clients during the beta versions is what we are most proud of. Many of them have expressed how much easier and efficient Wiblion has made website management for them, enabling them to concentrate on growing their businesses.
We want potential clients to know that our platform is tailored to meet their needs. We understand the challenges that small businesses face when it comes to website management and have developed a solution that is affordable, easy to use, and effective.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
I met my business partner while I was in the UK. He is from Mexico, and at the time, we were merely two individuals who got along well.
As soon as I came up with the idea, I shared it with him, and he supported the project wholeheartedly. From that moment on, we knew that we were in this together and that we needed to work diligently to help it grow to a point where it would be worthwhile. This understanding continues to this day.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the key lessons I had to unlearn was the notion that working exhaustively to create or design something almost “perfect” was sufficient, without knowing how to sell it. This was a significant mistake.
Over the years, I have worked in various places and observed others, and I learned that some companies offer exceptionally valuable products but fail to achieve the return on investment they need because they do not invest enough in presenting them to the right audience. In contrast, I have seen businesses that sell unoriginal, overly complex, and low-value products and services to the vast majority of people because they focus their efforts on aggressive marketing campaigns.
It may not seem “fair,” but that’s how the system operates.
I have come to realize that 50% of one’s success is derived from the quality and uniqueness of their product/service, while the other 50% is determined by how it is positioned in the market.
For a long time, I believed that these percentages were significantly different.
