Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jorge De Los Rios. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jorge thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
For a period of my life, I attributed success to money, and for that reason, other areas of my life suffered. I was not completely fulfilled because I was so obsessed with being ‘successful’ that it was starting to consume me. Looking back, I don’t think it was because I was greedy; I simply confused what society was selling me as the ideal of success with my inner potential to live the life I wanted to live. I thought that, in order to do that, I needed to follow society’s formula of success.
Now I understand that the first step to being successful is to define what success means to you. How does your life look as a successful person? The more detailed you can be in your vision toward success, the more likely it is that you will take the necessary steps to become successful.
As it happened to me when we talk about success, we usually do so in the context of money, and although money could be an important metric, it doesn’t paint the full picture. It’s like trying to paint a painting with one single color. Now, you might want to be like Van Gogh and use only blue for your painting, but for the vast majority of people, we want a painting that has a variety of colors, forms, and expressions.
Using this analogy, the question becomes, what other things besides money constitute a successful life for you? What about your health, your relationships, your interests, and your passions? All of these aspects build a successful life, and having clarity on how you want these aspects to manifest in your life is extremely important not only to become the successful person you want to be but also to recognize when you have arrived.

Jorge, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and since I was a teenager, I knew that my passion for communications, media, and performing arts was going to shape my life. I started doing theater in middle school, which immediately taught me how my intrapersonal and interpersonal skills, combined with my discipline, were going to directly impact my professional career. During my college years, I studied telecommunications and performing arts simultaneously, which helped me become an account manager and an actor today.
Acting allows me to enjoy a psychological trance with my colleagues to communicate a message to an audience using art as the platform. As an account manager in the movie industry, I use my communication techniques to communicate, explain, and/or illustrate digital marketing ideas that benefit my clients’ businesses. I’m very proud to be able to combine all my passions in the same environment, which makes me extremely happy professionally.
I’m very fortunate to have worked in multiple productions and projects both in front and behind the cameras/stage. At the same time, I know how to talk business and manage a select portfolio of movie theaters in the United States.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely! I try to live my life keeping in mind that life is a gift. We are here for a short period, and I try my best to squeeze every second that life gives me.
This perspective has shaped my creative journey as I permit myself to keep enjoying the things I love or to explore new things. I also remind myself not to take life so seriously. This journey is meant to be enjoyed as much as possible. We all go through challenges and adversities; however, when we see life from a bird’s-eye view, we immediately understand that most of our problems don’t really matter that much. There are only a few things in life that really matter, and those things deserve our focus; everything else is just noise.
Ultimately, understanding the things I can control versus the things I can’t control has helped me live more outside of my head and maintain a resilient perspective.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Like every story, mine is full of ups, downs, and twists! I wish I could say that everything in my life worked as planned, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. My whole life, I thought I was going to only work in things related to my two main passions: media and acting. However, after my father passed away, I started working in a car dealership almost by accident.
I needed to pay my bills and needed a full-time job fast when I saw a job post from a car dealership. They were hiring a business developer, which I thought had something to do with talking about the development of a business. Little did I know that it was basically a salesperson position over the phone. I have to confess that writing this makes me remember how naïve I was. I had never cared about cars in my life, but somehow I got the job. I can’t begin to tell you the many embarrassing moments I went through. Like the many times a client would ask me about a car, and I didn’t even know if we carried that car in our dealership even when the car the client was asking for was from the same brand as the dealership! My English at the time wasn’t the best either, so not only did I not understand my product, but I couldn’t communicate as effectively. It was a recipe for disaster. I honestly thought for months that I was going to arrive at the dealership one day, and they were going to fire me on the spot.
With that being said, I stayed in the business for almost 6 years. Part of it was because I was actually enjoying it, and the other part was because I didn’t know how to pivot back to the entertainment business. I finally decided to start sharing posts on social media about branding and marketing (skills that I learned during my time in the car business). When a corporation that owns around 51 radio stations reached out to me to help them with their social media needs, I was finally back on track!
Life could be full of twists and turns; however, I think that it’s important to recognize that every cycle comes with lessons that will help us for the next phase. I learned a lot in the car business, especially about how to talk numbers, the universal language of business! I also learned to really master my interpersonal skills while navigating very challenging interactions with customers who felt sensitive about their finances. Without those skills, I wouldn’t have the wisdom I now have as an account manager to manage the day-to-day challenges that come with the position.
