We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jorge Alvarez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jorge, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.
I started the business with a food truck. One day I was prepping for a party and I receive a call from someone saying he was Gordon Ramsay. I thought a friend was pranking me so I hung up! Shortly after I received another call saying she was Ramsay’s producer and that I had hung up on him! Chef Ramsay was filming food trucks in major cities for a new show. He chose me to highlight in Miami. He challenged me to a cook-off in the truck and I won! That helped the business take off. I then sold the truck and started a traditional catering business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I spent 30 years in healthcare and education management. Along the way I volunteered as a cook at various church and community events. The last company I was with closed unexpectedly. That gave me the opportunity to take a different direction. I always enjoyed cooking so My wife and I purchased a food truck. That was 6 years ago!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We have 100% 5 star reviews. It is still remarkable to me that clients hire us and send a deposit without meeting us. Our food quality and customer service id the reason we stand out in a crowd.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
When we thought of purchasing a food truck we had no funds to do so. We ran a GoFundMe campaign. Our church community raised close to $20,000! We purchased our truck same as the scene in the movie “Chef”. An old, beaten down truck but with a full kitchen. After refurbishing it we were off and running!
