We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jorge Aguilar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jorge, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My mom raised me to be a gentleman from a young age. She taught me to never let a lady walk on the street side of a sidewalk and to always open doors for them. Ladies come first and Chivalry isn’t dead. Til this day I still do these things, and much more, for my beautiful wife and daughter. So that’s what inspired the name. Besides “Drinks By Jorge” just doesn’t have the same pizzazz to it.
Jorge, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into bartending out of necessity. I was a truck driver for a well known grocery store in Florida. My truck got into a fight with some trees, and we lost. I lost my job while my wife was 7 months pregnant with our daughter. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, I went looking for jobs, immediately(I did cry a little, though). I applied to work in the most magical place on earth. No, not that one. The one that has Harry Potter rides. I was hired as a stocker. I stocked up different venues, including bars. I got cool with the bartenders and learned the signature cocktails. I was allowed to help out the bartenders with easy drinks, when they were busy. I became a student of the craft and started learning as much as I could about bartending. Bartenders from the venues would call out, and I was called in as a last resort. Fast forward and I finally became a bartender at a sports bar at the theme park.
At this time, I’m getting into mixology. Personally, I didn’t like the signature cocktails that were in our menu, so I would just make drinks specifically for my guests, if they were cool, that is. That’s when necessity turned into a passion.
I started my business in the year 2020, after I had a couple of events under my belt. What sets me apart from my competition is that I specialize in making craft cocktails, have a sense of humor, and am always myself. I take the time to get to know my clients and what they like, and I try to incorporate that into a customized cocktail experience. I can make anything as long as I have the ingredients for it, but I think that personal touch is what gives me an edge. As long as my clients are having a great time, then I know that I did my job.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Three words. Word of mouth. Since I still work in the hospitality industry. I get a lot of my business from co-workers, former co-workers, and guests that I meet at the bar that I bartend at. I’ve been referred by people that I’ve only met once. The best form of advertising for my business is word of mouth.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
From the start, being personable has gotten me business. Again, I’m unashamedly myself and I love what I do. I don’t act for tips or anything like that. I think that my guests, and potential clients, can sense that. We click immediately, and I let them know that I do private event bartending. That has been my most effective strategy.
I mean, would you return to a bar that had a bartender that was not friendly?
Anyone can learn how to bartend, but not everyone can handle being behind the bar and love what they do. And people notice that.
