We were lucky to catch up with Jordynn Greeson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jordynn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
For the past nine years, I’ve been living the dream as an artist behind the chair, and let me tell you, it’s been amazing! I’ve done a little of everything—making sandwiches, folding clothes, even crunching numbers as a small business banker. But from day one in the salon, I’ve never had that dreaded “Ugh, work” feeling. Meeting new clients daily, swapping stories from their wild celebrations to heart-wrenching tales, and using my talents to boost their confidence—it’s a privilege I’ll never take lightly. There’s no way I’m trading this for a 9-to-5!
Being an independent stylist isn’t just a job I adore; it’s a lifestyle upgrade. I get to call the shots with my schedule, which is a lifesaver for mom-life, allowing me to be there for my kiddos, husband, and friends. The freedom is unbeatable—no cookie-cutter mold, no pesky rules, just pure creative liberty to make my clients shine! Recently, I gave my business a fresh new look that reflects the real me, and it’s like adding extra sprinkles to an already fabulous cake. Who knew things could get even better?
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been in the beauty industry as a licensed hairstylist for nine years, but the love for hair is practically in my DNA! As a kid, I was always obsessed with anything beauty related, experimenting on my own locks, friends, and family. I even have a few family members who were/are hairstylists. To think, I almost joined the Coast Guard, oh how life would’ve been so different. I took the plunge into beauty school at 19, only to face a little plot twist when my school shut down just three months shy of graduation. Talk about nerve wracking! I switched tracks, found a new school in a different city, and finally got that license.
My first gig was as a commission stylist at a salon in downriver Michigan, where I soaked up all the wisdom like a sponge. Fast forward to two years ago, and I packed my bags and family up for mid-Michigan, landing at Capellini Salon as an independent stylist with my own booth—hello, small business owner life! The salon owner has been fabulous, and I’ve recently rebranded to focus on the colorful and creative cuts and styles I adore, from vivid color transformations to bridal hair magic.
Capellini has introduced me to an amazing squad of supportive stylists and lifelong friends who’ve cheered me on. Shoutout to Jenna Lu, a powerhouse who inspires me to keep it real in both my personal journey and my hairstyling career!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve always been the shy type, worried about what folks from my past might think if I started posting on social media. But lately, I’ve jumped into the social media whirlpool! Now, I’m whipping up TikToks and reels, having a blast without a care in the world about others’ opinions. It’s been a game-changer, attracting a fabulous crowd, bringing in new clients, and giving them a sneak peek into the real me—not just the results of my work.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a hairstylist is the smile I see on my clients face when we’re finished. Even the sigh of relief, followed by “ah, I’m back.” I know that feeling deeply and it makes my heart swell.
