We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jordyn Maresh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jordyn below.
Hi Jordyn , thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
As a make up artist, half the game is staying relevant and making sure people know that you are still creating. I run every aspect of my business. I do love freelance, and, although posting on social media platforms can be a challenge as someone who can be a private person, I still do check it to see who is still creating, who is working and who is working on what. I recommend making drafts of specific projects and posts. So you don’t have to worry about posting on the spot, and when you need to put out more of your work, you are able to do so, as well as interacting with other people’s posts! Networking is also very important in a freelancing industry full of artists!
Jordyn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello! My name is Jordyn Maresh i’m a freelance special effects make up artist in the Los Angeles local area. My bread-and-butter is realism and prosthetics. But I do love giving someone a beautiful gland once in a while for a special occasion. I got into the industry by starting in theater when I was in school, and moving to LA when I was 18 years old. I attended Cinema makeup school and have been working out of the gate ever since.
I think one thing that does set me apart from everyone else is that I love creating. I genuinely enjoy making things with my hands and problem-solving to create really cool things for peoples films. When making things nothing is ever easy. And I think that’s what makes it so rewarding about this industry when you finish a project.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I always knew it wasn’t gonna work in a cubicle. I wasn’t built for a 9-to-5 job. But originally I wanted to go into music, I was a musician up in Oregon, and I was putting roots down in the Pacific Northwest, but after getting burnt out at such a young age I didn’t know what to do with myself, I enjoy doing make up, but I never thought of it as a career, and I stumbled upon a YouTube video one day and started doing DIY prosthetics and decided to go to school for it.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Make up was my side hustle! I would do my friends prom make up and other peoples special occasions. Before I even thought about going to school people and asked me if I was interested in it and I didn’t know that was even a possibility. I’m very grateful for all the opportunities my friends have given me to explore my creativity at such a young age. It has grown gradually, but every job that I’ve had has been very rewarding. And I’ve gotten to work on some pretty cool stuff!
