We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jordyn Anese. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jordyn below.
Jordyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned how to be a radio personality by being one. A lot of on-the-job experience and a great person to work under for sure. The process is best learned at its natural progression, so there’s nothing I would’ve done to speed it up. My connection with my hometown Flint, Michigan and my love for music and talking are the most essential things. I can’t say there’s been obstacles, but I can say that being a mom and thinking of ways to portray the image that I can be proud of the same way motherhood gives me pride.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Jordyn Anese, I was blessed to get into the radio industry by way of who I knew. A friend of mine who I’d supported for some time plugged me into the opportunity to do radio in 2021. A year later I’d progressed well enough to land a gig with Cumulus Media’s Z92.7 WDZZ. In this position I have been able to fine tune the skills I already had such as marketing, storytelling, social media campaigns, content creation and event hosting. I have also learned things that weren’t quite on my radar before like some programming and production. I’ve had the chance to let some of my friends who own businesses get their first chance at radio marketing through promotions. My ability to pivot is what I’m most proud of in the season of my life. I hope that anyone who reads this and enjoys what they read, follows me knowing they will see a true picture of what Flint, MI has to offer in talent and events. They will see glimpses of me in mommy mode, work mode, and creative writing with my blog, lastly encouraging women and making people laugh.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being authentic helped a lot and being open to meeting new people. Authenticity translates and moves things way better than anything else. When I didn’t know, I asked. When i did know, I shared. Meeting new people and building a relationship is going to be something that will set you apart in this time of heavy social media interaction. When people have a relationship with you, they are more likely to bring your name up in rooms you’re not in.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn being friendly without boundaries. It was actually a faraway lesson, not an up close one. Over time I have seen others overextend themselves in business and building. Giving more than what they have, feeling depleted and lashing out. That takes a lot. Seeing it so much, I realized that when Beyonce said, “In business you can’t be friendly, but you can be polite” in her “Life is but a Dream” documentary, she wasn’t wrong. I have managed to pour into people that pour into me. Anything extra I do is because I want to give and/or it’s mutually beneficial. “I love who loves me” -Keke Palmer
