We recently connected with Jordon Wells and have shared our conversation below.
Jordon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think it takes consistency and hard work. I believe you won’t get better at anything in life without putting in the work and being consistent with your craft. Those losses you take at the beginning only make you better.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Jordon. I’m a 22 year old photographer that grew up in Cartersville, Georgia. I first picked up a camera when I was 18 years old, taking photos of my friends and saving memories. I was always interested in cameras and and editing since middle school. I would always make sports edits and edit videos for my football team. Even though I loved the idea of cameras, I never wanted to be labeled a photographer. I never thought that taking photos would change my life. But 4 years later, I’m in love with it. I’ve now worked with big artists, professional athletes, big brands and more. I couldn’t thank God enough for all of the blessings. I’m ready to continue putting my work out into the world.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to learn was not all work will be paid work. In order to progress in your industry, you will have to start out doing a lot of free work. For a business, it’s not the most efficient. But some opportunities can’t be missed! Some of my most successful photos came from free sessions. Sometimes you just have to give up your pride and capitalize on opportunities.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Photography started out being my side hussle. I would charge $20 a photoshoot to get some extra money, while working another job. I never thought photography could take me anywhere, it was just a way to get some extra money. Once I moved out for college, my photography took a backseat. I never did any photoshoots during my stay in college. I eventually drop out and a year later, I decided to pick up a camera again. I started falling in love with taking pictures and began experimenting with different styles. A few years later, it’s my business.
