We were lucky to catch up with Jordin Taylor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jordin, appreciate you joining us today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
Baking cakes was always a fun hobby to me. Something to take the stress away. My friends and family were the first to tell me I should really take this seriously and make this into a business. A few years later, by the help of my mom i finally got the courage to pursue Blush. It took me a while because I knew when I started a-lot of the responsibility and consistency would fall on me. My family has always been great in the kitchen we naturally knew how to throw things together and create a delicious meal. But when it came to baking, that was my niche. I have a wonderful support system when it comes to friends and family reposting my content, referring me as their go to baker and so on.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up my family always gathered around the family table to enjoy my Grandma Rita’s butter pound cakes. Around the age of 8, my Great Grandma Gleghorn came to visit from Springfield, Illinois for Thanksgiving. Together we made lemon meringue and sweet potato pies from scratch. That was the icing on the cake. Before my Grandma Gleghorn left to go back home she surprised me with a rolling pin. From then on, I was hooked. As the years went by, I was baking all the time. Every holiday turned into every gathering and every gathering turned into every family/friend event. Word got around and I was soon inspired to sell my creations. I now provide cakes for all sorts of occasions even a few weddings through out the year.
At such a young age, I wanted to start my business so the struggles of school came up and balancing my decisions. I then lost my best friend, Aunt Cynthia who was one of my biggest cheerleaders. I actually stopped baking and being productive with myself for a while. My mom decided to get me out of my rut and had me consider applying for the SURE Program at the University of Houston Bauer College of Business. The SURE Program is a program that helps entrepreneurs start their business and goes into detail with what you need to do to achieve your business goals. The SURE program helped mold my business into what it is today. With that being said It has not been a smooth road its actually still pretty rocky. There is so much more in store for Blush and so many things I want to do.
It has taken a-lot of discipline and late nights but it is so rewarding to see the designs I come up with when I finish. Blush specializes in everything buttercream. I like to give a very classy, whimsical vibe to my cakes not so stiff or novelty. I like to give more of a modern feel to my cakes, Most of my clients who will usually send me a theme or color scheme for their event and I will create a cake based off of that inspiration.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Like many cooks will say there is plenty of trial and error in the kitchen. I have gone days trying to get recipes perfected, long nights decorating cakes, prepping and so on. All while having my email blowing up with inquiries and going to my full time job the next day. During this ride, throughout the ups and downs I have learned how important it is to pray, take a deep breathe and take things a day at a time.
I have learned that I cannot fulfill every order requested, I have to plan out my baking and decorating days and take time to myself and accept help when given. I have a huge vision for Blush and where I see it going in the next few years and i undertsand it takes time for me to put this dream together. Without any of this I wouldn’t have the motivation to keep going.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Growing up my mom had me very involved in scholarship programs, volunteering, etiquette classes, the list goes on. Being so involved all these years has taught me that networking goes a long way. Word of my mouth has been my main strategy for growing my clientele.
