We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jordan Young. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jordan below.
Hi Jordan, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My journey into cinematography and digital marketing has been a mix of formal education, hands-on experience, and a passion for storytelling. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Full Sail University, graduating as Valedictorian and receiving the Advanced Achievement Award. Since then, I’ve been running Break Point Films as a freelance cinematographer and editor for a few film production studios. I’ve gained real-world experience by producing commercial, narrative, and documentary content. I’m also pursuing a Master’s in Digital Marketing, which has expanded my ability to combine technical video skills with effective marketing strategies.
Beyond education, much of what I’ve learned comes from jumping into projects that push me out of my comfort zone—whether it’s crafting a commercial campaign for a client or consulting on SEO and marketing strategies. Each project teaches me something new. The most essential skills have been a blend of creativity and technical ability. On the production side, mastering camera operation, lighting, and editing has been critical to delivering high-quality visuals. On the marketing side, understanding audience psychology, SEO, and how to integrate video into campaigns has been equally important.
However, I’d say communication and problem-solving skills are the unsung heroes. Whether it’s collaborating with clients or adapting on the fly during a shoot, these skills make all the difference in ensuring a project’s success.
If I could go back, I would have leaned into networking and mentorship earlier. Seeking out established video production and marketing professionals would have helped me avoid some trial-and-error learning. I also would have started filming my own content much sooner. Looking back, creating content would have been a powerful way to establish Break Point Films as a thought leader in the industry.
Additionally, embracing online resources like filmmaking and marketing tutorials sooner would have accelerated my technical expertise and business growth.
The biggest obstacle has been time—balancing client work, my education, and building Break Point Films often left little room for experimentation or personal projects. Financial constraints also pose a challenge, especially when investing in high-quality equipment or resources. Early on, I relied on a lean setup and creativity to compensate for limited tools.
Another challenge has been self-doubt. It’s easy to feel imposter syndrome when carving your path in a competitive industry. Overcoming that mindset and focusing on growth rather than comparison has been key to breaking through those barriers.
Jordan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My journey into cinematography began with music. Like many independent artists, I started out as a musician, and like many, I wanted to create my own music videos to share my work. With no formal training, I picked up a camera, taught myself the basics of filming, and started experimenting. What began as a necessity quickly became a passion. I discovered that I loved telling stories visually, and my curiosity led me to dive deeper into the art of cinematography.
Over time, a side pursuit evolved into Break Point Films, a full-service production company specializing in commercials, narrative films, and documentaries. I’ve also broadened my expertise to include digital marketing, blending my creative and technical skills to help businesses tell their stories and connect with their audiences effectively.
At Break Point Films, we offer video production services that span concept to completion. Whether crafting an engaging commercial, documenting a compelling real-life story, or bringing a fictional narrative to life, we focus on creating content that resonates. We also provide digital marketing services, such as content planning and SEO, to ensure our clients’ videos not only look great but also reach the right audience.
The problems we solve often revolve around helping businesses stand out in a crowded market. Many of our clients know they need video to grow their brands but feel overwhelmed by the process. We make it simple by guiding them every step of the way, from pre-production planning to post-production polish. By providing both creative and marketing expertise, we ensure their content delivers measurable results.
What sets Break Point Films apart is the fusion of creative storytelling and marketing strategy. I approach every project with a filmmaker’s eye and a marketer’s mindset, ensuring the final product isn’t just visually stunning but also aligned with the client’s goals.
Another key differentiator is my approach to production. I prefer creative, authentic concepts over cookie-cutter corporate styles. I also believe in keeping production lean and efficient, which allows us to deliver high-quality results without requiring big-budget setups or hired talent.
My background as a musician also influences my work—I understand the creative process and the emotional connection that artists and brands want to establish with their audiences. This perspective helps me create content that truly speaks to people.
I’m most proud of the journey itself—from filming my own music videos to running a production company that helps businesses and creatives tell their stories. One standout moment was graduating as Valedictorian and receiving the Advanced Achievement Award during my bachelor’s program. Those experiences reminded me of the power of perseverance and continuous learning, which I carry into every project.
I’m also proud of the trust I’ve built with clients. Whether it’s a small business taking its first step into video marketing or an artist sharing their story with the world, knowing they feel confident in my ability to bring their vision to life is incredibly rewarding.
At Break Point Films, we believe in the power of storytelling to connect, inspire, and drive results. Whether you want to grow your brand, capture a meaningful narrative, or bring a creative idea to life, we make the process accessible, collaborative, and enjoyable.
I want people to know that excellent video production doesn’t have to be intimidating or out of reach. We’re here to simplify the process, deliver exceptional quality, and ensure every project makes an impact.
Above all, I want clients and followers to see Break Point Films as a partner in their journey. Your story matters, and we’re here to help you tell it in a way that resonates and creates lasting value.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Yes, my side hustle became my full-time career after a life-changing weekend. The same weekend my son was born, I was laid off from my job. Determined to provide for my family, I turned to Staff Me Up, a platform for finding freelance film gigs. I started landing projects with producers for networks like HGTV and larger commercial productions.
What began as a way to make ends meet quickly grew into something bigger. I found more success freelancing than landing interviews for full-time roles, and those early gigs built my skills, portfolio, and network. Over time, I launched Break Point Films, transitioned from freelancer to business owner, and started attracting repeat clients, making my passion for storytelling my full-time focus.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I have found that the best source of new clients aside from Staff-Me-Up has been Word of mouth. But with what I have been learning in my studies for marketing I will be building content that is high qaulity visually and optimized for what my target audience is searching for. After all, marketing is about finding your audience where they are rather than wasting energy trying to bring them to you.
