We were lucky to catch up with Jordan White recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I have ever taken was making the decision to leave my job at Delta Airlines and pursue being an entrepreneur full time. Growing up in the small town of Graceville Florida, I always knew that to pursue my dreams I had to relocate. After graduating high school I took the small amount of money that I had saved up and moved to Atlanta Georgia. After months of struggle and nearly giving up, I was offered a job working for Delta Airlines where I stayed for 10 years. When the pandemic hit I was given a once in a lifetime opportunity to take an early retirement package and leave Delta. After much consideration and prayer, I took this opportunity as a sign that I needed to take a leap of faith and pursue my dream, my passion, Kolors Apparel full time. Although this decision was life changing, I have never regretted it because I get to do what I love every day while making the world a better place one shirt at a time.

Jordan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Creating a business has always been a dream of mine. When I was developing the concept for Kolors Apparel, I tried to use two things that I believe the whole world has in common, the need for clothes and knowledge of different colors. Through these two things I developed the concept of using word play and different color variations to catch people’s attention and generate conversation. The goal is to bring people from all different walks of life together with conversation through our eye catching merchandise. This concept is what sets my brand apart from any other brand.
I got to where I am today professionally by simply wanting more out of life. Even when working a demanding full time job, I spent most of my free time marketing my business, generating orders and making every order that was placed. I have had to overcome my biggest obstacle of financial insecurity which has allowed me to learn how to really believe in myself, my skills and my business at all costs. The most important part of being an entrepreneur for me is to continue to grow, learn and unite people. To do this I have had to remain extremely disciplined with my time management and sacrifice a lot for the brand’s long term success.
The thing that I am most proud of is continuing to develop Kolors as a diverse and authentic brand. With everything that is going on in this world it is very important for people to feel like there is a brand that supports every race, religion, age, gender, etc. Kolors Apparel not only does that but brings to light the real world events and issues that are taking place. This is done by using phrases or symbols on our merchandise to allow people to take a stand and be a part of something much greater. Kolors Apparel’s concept is truly a reflection of myself and how I approach people and circumstances, without judgment.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
When I first started Kolors Apparel I became my own manufacturer. While building up my clientele, I was able to transform a spare bedroom in my house into my work space to prepare the orders. After purchasing all of the equipment, vinyl, shirts, etc I learned how to create all of my products, designs and concepts by doing my own research or from the guidance of those around me. Although challenging, I enjoyed this process because it allowed me to feel a deeper connection and passion for my brand through creating each and every product that I sold.
As of recently I have outsourced the making of my products to a manufacturer. The reason I did this was because as business started to pick up it was no longer feasible for me to create every product ordered and still provide the level of customer service and quality that Kolors Apparel is known for. To find the right manufacturer a lot of research needs to be done, whether that’s online or speaking to your network for recommendations. Although I am still new to the having a company manufacture my products, I have learned that the more research you do about a company the better. Additionally, do not be afraid to change the company you use if it’s not working out. Each product that is sold is a direct reflection of you and your business. Making sure that your products are being created according to your vision is important and creating the right network/team to accomplish that takes trial and error and time.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
To start my business I used the money that I saved up from my full time job. Even after starting my business, I continued to work full time at Delta and part time as a barber. This allowed me to be able to fund my business while growing my clientele without the extreme financial pressure.
