We recently connected with Jordan Wayson and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The story behind Roseway Consulting is like many women in an online business, particularly military spouses. I started Roseway Consulting because I felt the pull to be at home more for my family. Having 3 kids under the age of 6 kept me BUSY! Add to that a husband who was gone for multiple deployments, trainings, and constantly working long hours, I knew there had to be a better way. I wanted to own my own business, set my own hours, and be at home to support my family even if that just meant getting dinner on the table at a decent hour or doing one load of laundry during the day. That also ultimately meant wanting to earn more money while working less! To many, that sounds like a pipe-dream, especially military spouses who frequently move, have unreliable childcare, and are overeducated and underemployed. That’s why I am on a mission to employ military spouses with virtual jobs where they’re able to contribute to their families through countless moves, schedule changes, and all the challenges we face as military spouses.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Roseway Consulting started in 2021 as a side-hustle, when I decided to help my friend who was a photographer manage her backend. She was tired & overworked dealing with the day-to-day of running a business as a solopreneur. I very quickly saw the need for the services I was providing for her. Client management, scheduling, and implementing systems and processes transformed her business as she was able to focus in her “zone of genius” again which was creating the actual art. She got her time & freedom back in her business. This was rewarding for me, and her as well.
This side-hustle quickly turned into a full fledge business when I left my 9-5 in January of 2022 and put myself out there. I’ve helped health & wellness coaches, authors, photographers, real-estate agents, insurance agents, home decor business, and even a mobile swim lesson company with their backend systems, administrative tasks, and digital marketing so that they can free up time & focus on the areas that will really move the needle in their business. We are quickly scaling & I am looking forward to helping military spouses get back in the workforce to have a rewarding and flexible career that will provide for their family!
What makes me different than any other virtual assistant or OBM: resourcefulness. I pride myself on being able to dive in quickly and figure it out. Sometimes I have to go to my clients & say, “I have no clue how to do this, but I’m more than willing to learn.” I think that makes me an invaluable asset to my clients, because most of the time they don’t have the time or energy to figure it out and they need someone to stand in the gap and do that research for them. As a business owner, you wear a lot of hats especially if you’re a solopreneur, and sometimes you just need to know that someone has your back! I am a sounding board for my clients & I help them get clear on any ideas or thoughts they might have. I am always honest and willing to give my opinion.
Our mission is: Helping service based businesses become more powerful, productive, and profitable through strategic partnership with their business goals in mind.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I am a lifelong learner, which goes back to what I said earlier about being resourceful. Some major books that have influenced me & my entrepreneurial journey are: Profit First, Atomic Habits, Ask and It is Given, and Chillprenuer. Mindset is a key part of business that I think a lot of people miss, and I truly believe that doing the mindset work has helped me grow so quickly in business. I have spent so much time working on my limiting beliefs around business, money, and my view on the world. It has allowed me to get back up even when its hard, and newsflash running a business is hard. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. It’s a daily choice and the mindset shifts have allowed me to keep going, keep pursuing, and keep reaching even when it’s far from a walk in the park!
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I spoke on this briefly already, but I worked in a sales office as an office manager for 5 years prior to starting Roseway, and it was an amazing job. I learned so much from those people. My boss, who was an amazing entrepreneur himself allowed me the freedom to work on my own terms and I really do believe that helped me in my journey because I knew how to work independently, be resourceful, and be a great asset to those around me. So even though I’m in a completely different field, those years were pivotal in shaping who I am as a business owner. When I finally decided to leave, I was terrified. I didn’t want to disappoint anyone, and I was afraid I was giving up a great job I could never get back, but I took the leap. No regrets as of today, but once I started Roseway Consulting I immediately saw the need and knew it was what I wanted to pursue. I was scared of sales and finding clients, but for the most part clients have found me. Sure I’ve put myself out there in Facebook groups, marketing events, etc. but word of mouth marketing has been super powerful for me. Mindset has also been a huge factor into turning my side-hustle into a full time gig!
