Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jordan Walls. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jordan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea for our business started out as a senior project for 2 classmates and I in college. We had the idea to go and combine 3 topics that each of us were familiar with and the final project ended up being something that everyone that we talked to said was a good idea. Everyone supported the idea in school, so why wouldn’t people from the general public like to purchase our product too? We felt this would work because we had confidence in our abilities to make a worthwhile product. At the time of creation, not a lot of people had similar products to the one that we were creating, and the ones that did had their own issues.
Jordan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always been interested in learning how different things work even as a child and I believe this lead me to pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Hampton University. This all started as a senior project in college, but we decided to make it a full business based on the responses from others. We are currently in the fashion technology business and we are in the process of creating and releasing a solar powered jacket that can wirelessly charge your cellphone. Our product picks up where others leave off by solving all of the problems that could come with a jacket that can charge your phone. This jacket and our business has received support from Pharrell Williams’ Black Ambition Prize Competition, as well as being endorsed by various other accelerators and competitions.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My co-founders and I all attended Hampton University at the same time and are all graduates of the Electrical Engineering Program in 2020. At the time we had known each other for years as we were all pretty much in the same courses. For our senior project, we were partners together and did research throughout the entire year on our product.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Our initial funding was put together through various pitch competitions and accelerator programs. We have applied to many, and became finalists for a couple. This has given us the capital to start our business.
