We were lucky to catch up with Jordan Walker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Shortly after college, I landed a job with a fortune 100 company. My aunt Alicia worked with the company for quite a while, and had built up connections that got me an interview through a temporary Agency. This was a temporary agency, so I had to earn my stay.My job was working in Document Solutions(Grove City, Ohio) where I processed policies. I had just moved to Columbus, Ohio( about a half hour from Grove City) from my home town Detroit, Michigan, and stayed with my sister for a while until I could get on my feet. This had been after a breakup with a middle school , turned high school, turned college sweetheart( If that wasn’t a thing, it is now!). It had ran its course, and it was time for growth. The kind of growth, only God knew of.
I earned my stay at Nationwide, and was hired permanently. I began climbing up ‘The ladder”. I moved up two positions within the first 3 years, and found myself at a standstill for a moment. At that point in time,I had put in over 120 applications! I had put in so many, I started joking to my coworkers about it. I knew that I deserved a higher pay and position, and that it would soon come. I knew that with every application, I would come closer to that higher paying job. So I found enjoyment in the process. It was the only way. At that point, I would think to myself, “If I could get through practices and camps playing D1AA football, I could achieve anything. No, I wasn’t an All-American football player ,but I had made it to that level. I got through what I knew I could, and proved to myself just what I needed to prove to myself. This was no different. I would send my mother screenshots of the amount of applications I had submitted. she would say “Wow!…that’s ok.. It’s coming. I’m praying”. My father would say” Keep going son”. They both believed. If ever I called my sisters, they would speak good words.I had a team,Thats all I needed. Find a team! Whoever uplifts you with positive energy. “Energy can be transmitted, and that will propel you!”. I then landed a job as a Quality Assurance Coordinator!
I was in Quality Auditing for a few years; and though very appreciative, I felt a “pull” from within. A burning desire. Before I left Detroit, I recall telling my mother that I had a gift that I would use to help the masses one day. That I had something within me that I felt was LOCKED. I would say” I JUST HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO UNLOCK IT”.
One day while on instagram, I came across a local Ohio film director and producer(Dom Campbell). I thought back to my childhood days of acting within the confined spaces of my bedroom, and bathroom. I remember the love. How committed I was to the characters I created. I truly believed. That’s all I needed in the world. I knew that it still lived within me.That LIGHT.
I reached out to the Dom( Ohio filmmaker).A year later. My first lead role.
At my job,I would walk around conducting audits, and people would call me “Hollywood”. One day I decided to leave my job at Nationwide Insurance. That “pulling feeing” had become too much to ignore. I was headed to a city that had became just as great as Hollywood in the film world.Atlanta,GA!!!
A risk I knew I had to take.
I packed up everything, and left. Ironically, a man that I worked with at Nationwide Insurance had a house down in Fayetteville,GA. He allowed me to stay there.”What are the odds?!” This was confirmation to me.That I had made the right move.
I worked at Hartsfield jackson International Airport, and attended acting classes in Atlanta. The job I worked for allowed me,and my family to fly. I used the App LinkedIn to land a two week contract with Google in Monks Corner, South Carolina. After that, I used instagram to network and ended up landing a role in a DC superhero fan-film in St.Louis called ICON. The risk was showing great reward.
I received a job opportunity for me to move to Hollywood,CA. I had always dreamed of California. I use to visualize a winding road and tunnels which later was revealed to me as Malibu.. well since my coworkers called me Hollywood, It all made since right? I packed four huge duffle bags, sold my Charger Daytona, and flew to Hollywood.
I stayed in Hollywood hotels for a while, and rented a car for a month before I could find a little fuel efficient Toyota at an auction. It wasn’t nearly as stylish as my Charger Daytona, but it was what I needed.
I got on Craigslist and found a home to stay in with a Sri-Lankan family and an older man in the valley. The older man just so happened to be a writer and director. We ended up making a short film and had the Sri-Lankan family star in it.It was fun. I had Hit the ground running.
Since my move to Hollywood, I have lead in four films. My most recent film to be released very soon is titled “UNDERNEATH: Children of the sun”.
So What is life,Without taking a risk?
Jordan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jordan Charles Walker. I got to where I am today because of a great tribe around me. My parents, sisters, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins..they’ve filled my soul with love from the very beginning. They prayed for me. For that I am grateful.. I got to where I am today by believing that I will be of great service to the world, and that I will try my best to fulfill my purpose in this world; Or what I see as “The kingdom”.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to help people in various ways..on a massive scale. I once heard that a journey to a thousand miles begins with one step..on my phone I once had a picture of my family as my screen saver because I want to be able to give back to them. Then my screen portrait changed to a family I saw on a documentary in Sudan who was poor, because I want to help the world( I hope to find that exact family one day).. Now it has changed to a picture of myself ,as a two year old boy… This came with the realization that to help my family, and help the world, I had to follow what I knew as a child…that creativity..that imagination. When I look at it,it’s as if that little me is depending on.. well……me.I have to channel it all. I wish this all to be contagious.. That’s wealth to me..that’s the start. That’s a huge part of the mission.
I have few ideas for non-profits that I want to start. I want to help victims of various forms of Abuse, and people suffering from addictions, and various forms of mental illnesses.I want to help educate people on proper nutrition, and how herbs can heal. I want to open up spaces where people can go to meditate, rejuvenate, talk, eat fruits, and drink cold pressed juices.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I read a lot of books and look at YouTube videos from a spiritual mentor of mine named Myles Munroe. He was introduced to me by a genius prostitute I met who baptized me in a bathtub. He speaks a lot on finding purpose, and releasing your potential. I research men like Nikola Tesla, and read books like “As a man Thinketh” by James Allen, “Think and Grow rich” by Napoleon Hill, and “The Alchemist” by paulo coelho. I see books as my “access to an unlimited amount of mentors”. A lot of them I find emphasize the power of manifestation. The Bible. You don’t have to be religious at all. I use YouTube binaural beats videos to meditate, and constantly research healing herbs, and nutrition. It all starts with your temple. Treat it right. Treat it with love.
