We were lucky to catch up with Jordan Taylor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jordan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
There was always a part of me that wanted that, but I didn’t know in what direction I was going to go. As the years have gone by, I’ve been able to utilize each of my creative interests and from there I believe I’ve been able to grow more as an artist. There may not have been a particular defining moment that said ‘I want to do this’, I just knew I wanted to do what I loved for the rest of my life and be able to share that creativity with others along the way.
Jordan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jordan Taylor, I’m a writer, singer-songwriter, a princess character actor, and I’m currently working on building a modeling portfolio. I’ve been singing & writing since I was very young and I grew up with art & music heavily emphasized in my life. As I got older I joined music groups like orchestras, bands, choirs & theatres both in and out of school. Eventually this would all lead to meeting a multitude of amazing artists of all sorts and to the amazing opportunity that would be recording my first song ever. I was always writing poems & finally started writing songs and was so excited to finally combine two of my favorite things. I had never, at that point in my life, imagined myself to be considered a songwriter and I now have almost 30 songs I’ve written under my belt. I think Theatre, Character Acting & Modeling go hand in hand, and my experience in theatre comes into play with Character Acting improv with kids asking a million and one questions to the character I’m friends with that day & Modeling when trying to create a scene for a shoot. For awhile I was playing with set design and creative direction and it’s still something I want to pursue as I continue on with new projects.
My versatility is something that I am very happy to be able to work with. I’ve always loved playing dress up in different styles, learning different songs in different genres and languages. It just adds a whole new level of creativity, expands my experience & generates the opportunity to do and try so many different things.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
One of the biggest ways you can support the creative ecosystem is through “opportunity”. There’s always an abundance of talented creators around you in your city that are looking for the opportunity to be seen/heard. Models, vocalists, musicians, artists, etc. Off the top of my head, if you asked me for photographer, musician & artist recommendations for an event in El Paso, TX I could easily give you a list of 5-8 locals of EACH that you could reach out to and that’s just coming from one person.
Local artists and musicians shouldn’t have to look outside of their city for appreciation & listening ears, they should feel that they are just as welcomed and loved in their home town as when they are outside of it. There’s a famous quote that I’m sure everyone has heard some version of: “The grass is greener where you water it.”
Nurture the artists growing in your home town, visit local markets, go to local shows, get to know your local talent. Refer them, promote them, hire them & appreciate them. Music and art is not as easy as it may seem, but we love it, and we love when we feel the love in return.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Euphoria & Relationship. When I’m working in my creative environment, whether it be writing, performing etc. I am in another world completely. To be appreciated for it and to be working on making this a full time job is insane! My parents always told me to find what I love and make it what I do for a living. Be happy in what I do and do it with conviction. Along with the joy it brings, I get to create relationships with other amazing creatives along the way and that is beyond rewarding. I have met a crazy amount of talented people through my work and I sometimes still can’t believe it.
