We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jordan Sylvain a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I would have liked to start my business sooner, but COVID could have been a hinderance and ended up being the catalyst. I love being my own boss and wish I would have started sooner, but I am glad I didn’t have the uncertainty during the mandated closures. While my industry was paused I was able to develop a business plan to safely serve the needs of my clientele. I was married shortly before opening and this seemed to serve my family much better.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been practicing massage for 10 years in the greater Grand Rapids area and recently relocated to NE Grand Rapids. I got into massage therapy based on recommendations from friends who were LMTs that thought I had the right mentality for it. I was working as a lift operator and Boyne Highlands and found out they offered a course in massage therapy. I got my certification in 2013 from The Solace Institute. I would say my strength sets me apart from others. I strive to address client’s issues and create a individual treatment plan based on their needs. I have helped clients with insomnia, spinal and muscle issues, post surgery, headaches and I specialize in sports and deep tissue massage.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I tried to save as much money as I could from my job and since I couldn’t go anywhere during covid I saved as much as I could from the covid unemployment to be able to start my own practice. Luckily I had most of my own equipment from being a traveling massage therapist prior to opening.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
High ethical standards and continuing education has helped build client trust. I’ve relied a lot on word of mouth and referrals and I’ve had a lot of reviews that really make me feel good about how I help people.
