We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jordan Reid a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
What do I think it takes to be successful? A lot of things! So many qualities come together to guide individuals, or teams to “success.”
First things first. You have to define what success means for you. There are a million and one people out there who will tell you success is owning a mansion with a 12-car garage filled with Lambos, and that’s fine. But what if you don’t want all that?
What if success to you is simply buying a modest house to raise a family and purchasing that new environmentally friendly EV you’ve always wanted?
Success is different for everyone.
Next, you must develop a realistic plan you can consistently follow to inch your way towards success every day, week, and year. Every “overnight success” is hidden behind years of hard work no one will ever see.
Creating a long-term plan that gets you closer to your version of success each day is far more valuable than random explosive bouts of “productivity” that won’t get you anywhere.
Finally, with your realistic plan in place. It’s time to execute. Here’s when your discipline kicks in. Without the discipline to consistently take action on your plan, you’ll find yourself treading water indefinitely.

Jordan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
It all started with a book for me. I vividly remember reading my first personal finance book, and realizing there was a way to build your life beyond the typical 9-5 job. That’s not to mock a traditional job in any way. I just knew I wanted the foundation of my life to be based on something I built. I wanted freedom and control over my time, lifestyle, and earnings potential.
I grew deeply interested in the power of real estate investing. I learned everything I could about it via hours of reading books, listening to podcasts, and watching videos on YouTube.
I’m also fortunate enough to have family who are already successful real estate investors. They have been foundational in the success and growth of my real estate business.
I started my real estate investment company, Contenza Properties, towards the start of 2018. With the help of my partners and my team, we have built our portfolio up to 25 single-family homes. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my friends, partners, family, and girlfriend who have supported me every step of the way.
I also run a California-based Instagram account called Discover California. I’ve grown to over 10,000 followers across Instagram and Facebook. In just over a year, I’ve managed to land several brand deals, and reach millions of people with my California-centric photos and videos.
I love sharing all the fun and exciting things there are to do, explore, and see in this wonderful state I call home.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
For this question, I’ll talk about how I built up my social media following for Discover California. First and foremost, you have to post interesting content people actually want to see and engage with!!!!
I’d say that’s 90% of what really matters.
You can use all the best hashtags, pay for all the social media ads you want, and post ten times a day, but none of it will matter if your content is boring.
I first focus on shooting high-quality videos and photos people will genuinely want to watch/look at. I’m always looking for something interesting to shoot when I’m out exploring.
The next important thing for growing an audience is being consistent. You can have all the best content in the world, but no one will stick around if you never post anything.
My posting schedule is perfect for me. But It took me a few months of experimenting to find out what works.
I post every other day; Alternating between content I created and content from the community. This allows me to post consistently high-quality content, all while avoiding getting overwhelmed and burning out.
It’s easy to get caught on the content treadmill and get stuck!
So, to sum it up, your foundation needs to be built around consistently posting high-quality content people actually want to see. Do that, and you’ll slowly grow over time.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has impacted my mindset the most. When you’re trying to build something greater than yourself, you must go into the process with the right attitude.
The 7 Habits helped me build a solid foundation throughout my journey.
For example, the second habit, “Begin With the End in Mind,” is one I frequently refer back to.
It’s a huge motivator when you have an unshakable vision in the back of your mind.
