We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jordan Nunez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
What a great question! I started building my studio back in 2019, which ended up being one of the most intense years of my life. My father passed away, I asked my husband to marry me, we bought a house together… so many life changes on top of trying to bring Good Mud into the world. Career-wise, I had just left a job I held for years in the medical field to try my hand at a more predictable corporate office gig. I hated it. I knew that position was not going to last long, and Good Mud felt like a life preserver.
That was an incredibly turbulent time. I have to be honest, though, I’m not sure that Good Mud would be what it is today if I had started sooner. There were some enormous internal shifts that happened for me that year which made me into the person I am. A person who could be vulnerable to start a creative career with my own two hands.
I think when it comes to making a decision like that, there is no early or late. Whenever you start is right on time.
Jordan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Absolutely. Howdy, all :-) my name is Jordan Nunez and I am the owner/artist/maker behind Good Mud Ceramics. I started Good Mud in a desperate bid to reconnect with myself, and to align my life with what I wanted most- to be making art as much as possible. I am humbled and overjoyed to be 3 years into making handmade heirlooms for your home & lifestyle.
As a maker, I am endlessly inspired with designs of the past. I look to vintage grocery store advertisements, old children’s book illustrations, and the natural world to keep me inspired. I love to invoke a sense of storytelling with my work.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
PAY ARTISTS FOR THE WORK THEY DO!
That’s it. Unfortunately, we all live in a society that requires money to survive. If you want to support artists, support them with your dollars. If you cannot afford to do so, telling folks about an artist whose work you admire is just as important.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The opportunity to know myself and to know the world around me.
Since actively using my creativity on a daily basis, I have found myself feeling more grounded and connected to the things I care about. I notice when something ignites curiosity or joy, and I am more easily able to follow that spark on a journey of inspiration exploration. It’s such a gift, you know, to allow yourself to be curious and to play with what you find.
