Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jordan Horton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jordan, thanks for joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Yes, I have been fortunate enough to transition into earning a full-time living from my creative work. However, the path to get there was far from an overnight success.
From day one, my creative journey was a combination of passion, perseverance, and continuous learning. I initially started DJ’ing in college just for fun while juggling other commitments like FCA and basketball. While it wasn’t an immediate source of income, it served as a platform for honing my skills and building a portfolio.
The major steps and milestones in my journey included networking with other creatives and showcasing my work for little to no money at all. One pivotal moment for me was when I got invited to DJ for the Texas Rangers minor league team, The Frisco Roughriders. I finally felt as if I had received some type of validation in the space. Which not only boosted my confidence but also opened doors to new opportunities.
It’s important to note that the process wasn’t without its challenges. There were periods of uncertainty and self-doubt, especially when balancing the demands of a day job with my creative pursuits. However, I remained committed to my craft, continually improving my skills, and embracing feedback as a means of growth.
In hindsight, if I could offer advice to my past self, I would emphasize the importance of networking strategically, consistently seeking after opportunities and also continuing to actively pursuit after my hopes, dreams and passions. While there’s no shortcut to success, these aspects can significantly expedite the journey.
Overall, my transition to a full-time creative career was a gradual process fueled by passion, perseverance, and a willingness to adapt and learn. It’s a testament to the belief that with God, active prayers, dedication and a strategic approach, anyone can turn their creative pursuits into a sustainable livelihood. Understanding that nothing is ever out of reach. Shoot for the stars.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello, readers! I’m J. Horton. Local DJ and Photographer in the DFW Metroplex and I’m thrilled to share a bit about myself and my journey.
My foray into the DJ and Photography space was born out of a deep passion for simply being creative. Making moments that will not only brighten up ones day, but also making memories that will last a lifetime. From the early days of exploring these fields, I was captivated by the power of music, storytelling, visual aesthetics, innovation and its potential to make a meaningful impact in my community.
In my 7 years of experience with DJ’ing and 3 years of experience with Photography, I’ve had the privilege of being apart of so many awesome things like, weddings, festivals and I just recently came home from being on tour with solo artist “Hulvey”.
I take pride in being different, super creative and delivering high quality results. What sets me apart from others in the field is my precise attention to detail, my innovative approach as well as making all my clients feel like family which consistently translates into timeless events that are memorable.
One aspect I’m particularly proud of is being featured on WE TV’s “Bridezillas”. I was able to show my love and passion on a national stage. That meant the absolute world to me. Especially because sometimes as a creative you can feel undervalued or unappreciated.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that I am committed to operating and delivering excellence, I value every single one of my supporters because I am not able to do this without you all sowing back into me. Whether you’re looking for a DJ or Photograpger for your special event, I am here to bring your vision to life.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me a bit better. I’m super excited and grateful for this opportunity.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to bring imagination to life and convey messages through my work. There’s a unique sense of fulfillment in the creative process, from the initial spark of an idea to the tangible creation. Witnessing the impact of my art on others, whether it evokes emotions, tells a story, or sparks inspiration, is incredibly gratifying. When I DJ, seeing people tap their foot, nod their head to the beat or start dancing always makes my heart happy. When I take photos for clients and I show them some of the work from the shoot, seeing the client smile at how amazing they look makes my heart happy.
Additionally, the constant opportunity for self-expression and growth within my craft makes every project a journey of discovery. Ultimately, the power to connect with people on a deep and meaningful level through art is what I find most rewarding.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
WORD OF MOUTH! I think when you do high quality work people have no choice but to recognize it. I am so appreciative and grateful for all of my clients. They always insert my name in rooms no matter where they are. I have so many awesome stories of former/current clients and how they were ranting about the work I was able to do for them. I always make sure to keep in touch with people I have worked with. You just never know when they will need you again or someone they know might need your services.
