We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jordan & Henry Schultz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jordan & Henry below.
Hi Jordan & Henry, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
A couple of years ago, we purchased our first home and loved the idea of creating our own furniture. We had just finished building our dining room table in preparation to host our first Thanksgiving dinner, and loved the process of building something with our own hands. The idea of adding epoxy to wood was not a new idea but it was new to us and we were up to the challenge of creating our own entryway table. Through the trials and errors of that build, we fell in love with the process! Just something about using the epoxy to showcase a piece of wood’s natural imperfections was so beautiful to us! To be able to take a scrap piece of wood, that in most cases would be destined for a fire pit, and be able to bring it new life is what started On The Bay Design! We now offer our customers the ability to choose their own wood, customize the design of the epoxy and pigment, to create a one of a kind piece of art for their home. Be it a coffee table, coasters, charcuterie board, catchall tray, or even an entryway table, our customers are apart of the entire build process!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are a husband (Henry) and wife (Jordan) team behind On the Bay Design based in Maryland. The idea of On the Bay Design started when we tried building a live edge wood and epoxy table for our home! We loved the process so much that we decided to dive head first into owning our own business where we could design and build custom wood and epoxy furniture for others. Here at On the Bay Design we offer coffee tables, entryway tables, desks, charcuterie boards, catchall trays, knife blocks, and coasters all with the customers’ vision behind the designs!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2020, we were a new company and had only a couple custom orders under our belts. We were commissioned by a local wedding venue to create a custom 8 foot long geometric wood bar cart. Previously to this, the largest custom piece we had made was maybe 4 feet long, but we are always up for a challenge and agreed immediately! Throughout this process we learned a lot! We learned about the process of pricing out materials for larger builds, writing invoices, estimating labor and turnaround time. Above all those, we learned that setbacks are inevitable! However, with those setbacks, comes time for learning and growth. And at the end of it all, we created a beautiful custom piece that is still in use today!
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
From the very beginning, we knew we wanted to utilize an ecommerce platform. We chose to run our business through Etsy. We felt that Etsy would provide us with the ability to reach a wider range of customers looking for homemade custom pieces. Since opening our Etsy shop, we have made multiple sales and acquired many repeat customers.
