We recently connected with Jordan Gilbert and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jordan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I owned and operated successful, nightclubs and bars and was making a huge name for myself in the industry. I was traveling the world at a super young age doing what I loved! My business partner and I founded and launched a liquor company and I was being called for training and speaking engagements. The best part was that I was really good at it. After a speaking at the Night Club & Bar show in Las Vegas I was hired to do consulting in Mongolia. Then my world crashed. My best friend who was more of a sister to me was killed and left for dead by a drunk driver weeks before I was to leave. Here I was in my twenties at the top of my career and in an industry producing and distributing the exact thing I took my best friend from me, Alcohol. I couldn’t do it anymore. I saw everyone in a different light, it was no longer fun and it just seemed wrong. My mom owned and operated Pearl MedSpa. A medical spa that was just minutes from one of my restaurant and bar locations in Portland Oregon. She was in the midst of opening her second location in Scottsdale, Arizona when all this occurred. After fulfilling my obligations overseas, I returned and told her I needed to change. My boyfriend at the time, (husband now) agreed to take the leap! We moved without knowing anything about the Health and Beauty business and not knowing anyone in AZ. It was terrifying! Literally I was doing the opposite in every way from working all hours of the night at the night clubs and bars, and traveling all the time to working essentially a 9-5 and not going anywhere…… literally anywhere. All I did was live and breathe the spa. Needless to say, it was worth it! I honestly cannot imagine anything better; I absolutely love our patients and we have created such an amazing extension of our business here in Scottsdale. I opened a 2nd location 5 years later and we are currently looking to expand again. We are ranked top two percent in the nation without any marketing or advertising. We built it completely from the ground up by word of mouth and now our reputation precedes us. It’s been the biggest blessing and one of my biggest accomplishments.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an only child and all my life I have watched my mom’s passion for giving back. Even as a little kid I can remember waking up on Christmas Eve morning and going to the projects in Chicago to pass out gifts to children whose parents were in prison. It has definitely shaped who I am to this day. My mom has said this is the ministry disguised as a Medspa. She instilled that in me and now I am happy to carry on her legacy. Every month Pearl MedSpa, our loyal patients and our team choose a different charity that is close to our hearts, and either support them physically financially or both. We help to fund an orphanage in Samoa that our team has traveled to and worked hands on with the children amongst other amazing, life-changing experiences. I truly believe that’s what sets us apart from other spa’s. People know our hearts and it’s not just about what’s on the outside, but what’s on the inside that really counts. People genuinely want to be a part of something bigger than themselves! At Pearl, we offer everything as light as a medical grade massage, aggressive as plastic surgery and everything in between. We are continuously educating ourselves on the newest, cutting edge, technology and treatments. Our goal is for our patients to leave feeling better about themselves on the inside and the outside than before they walked in the door. As I stated before, we don’t do any sort of outside advertising so our patients word-of-mouth is what has kept us so successful for the past 20 years, and we absolutely could not do any of this without them! Our reputation is key and we are so very proud of where we are today!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
After being in this industry 20 years I can truly say I think we’ve seen it all…. from the recession in 2008 to the pandemic in 2020 there have been some great lows. The key has been to stick to our brand. We don’t run out and purchase the first thing that comes to market, we try it ourselves, experience the results and ensure it will be a great treatment for our patients. It’s never pushing or selling when we have everything our patients truly need! We are here to correct what bothers them in the most cost-effective, efficient way we can. Honesty and transparency are key with our team and our patients.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I would absolutely choose the same career. I used to make fun of my mom and say how hard can your job really be?? You go in and tell people they are pretty all day! Well needless to say I was wrong. It seemed so unfulfilling and superficial but it’s quite the opposite. When I can help erase scars from an abusive ex or a dog bite, or help change a habit that has caused obesity, or even change something that has made someone so self-conscious, it’s so gratifying. We really do help to change people’s lives, and it’s a blessing I will never take for granted. I have met the most amazing inspiring people and for that I cannot imagine doing anything else.
