We were lucky to catch up with Jordan Diamond recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
Every hairstylist I’ve talked to will tell you the same thing – beauty school is rough, but you just have to get through it and get licensed so you can get out in the salon world. That’s so discouraging for future students and beauty professionals, to hear that the next 8 months – 2 years won’t be super pleasant even though it’s worth it in the end. So many people start out school enthusiastic but end up dropping out and pursuing something else. If I were to have control over the education system, I would start by hiring teachers who are not only well educated and talented behind the chair but also know how to share that information with others. Passionate teachers would inspire passionate students, and i feel that so many more would make it to the finish line.
One of the biggest things that needs to change about the beauty school system is the lack of education with textured or curly hair. After graduating, I felt like I knew my way around fine, straight hair but my curly knowledge was seriously lacking. Curls make up so much of our clientele, and mastering all textures is absolutely essential for success of the stylist and well being of the clients.
I was very lucky and had some amazing teachers during my schooling journey that taught me so much, but as far as education goes there is always room for improvement with the whole system!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a hairstylist who specializes in color, mostly lived in blondes and vivids! I’ve been licensed for almost 2 years, and am so thrilled to be working my dream job.
Despite going to CSU for sports medicine, I’ve always known that the beauty industry is where I’m meant to be. After having my son I went to beauty school, and got a job at a little salon immediately after getting licensed. It was a great place to start, and I’m so thankful for them.
8 months after starting there, I got a job offer at an amazing salon in Falcon. The ladies at the Color Studio have taught me so much, and refreshed my passion for hair! It’s been almost a full year with them and I’m happier than ever.
We are insanely busy, and I spend my days creating lived in blondes, platinums, balayages, and of course the occasional vivid! Our clients are amazing, and the atmosphere we strive to create always leaves our clients feeling revived.
My 3 coworkers and I are working hard to create beautiful hair all over Colorado, and we’re having a blast doing it!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part is seeing that look on a clients face at the end of an appointment that just says, “I feel so beautiful”. That’s the reason I got into this industry in the first place, to make people feel as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside! It’s amazing how a few tweaks on someone’s hair can change their whole outlook on themselves.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal in my creative journey is to inspire confidence everywhere I go, and to make a beautiful life for my kiddo. I always want to leave people feeling better than how I found them, and I’m hoping that by watching me do that my son will grow up do the same!
