Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jordan Dechambre. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jordan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think the path to success can be forged in myriad ways. But one thing is always constant: Hard work.
I don’t define success by the amount of money one makes, or a title at a business. I believe success is different for every person — and should be different for every person.
I strive to use my time and talents to make an impact in my community, whether that’s through showcasing some of Milwaukee’s most exciting emerging artists and designers, celebrating the dynamic flavors of our local culinary scene or exposing visitors to the natural beauty of Lake Michigan for moments of calm and reflection.
If someone visit the Historic Third Ward and feels inspired, happy, curious or content, I know I have successfully done my job.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
A client once called me a “lifestyle utility player.” I don’t think she could have said it any better.
From my decade-long tenure as managing editor of MKE Lifestyle magazine to the driving force behind several successful PR and marketing campaigns, collaborations and large-scale events, I have created a career wholly focused on lifestyle and wellness. Today, I am utilizing this unique skillset as Marketing and Communications Director for the Historic Third Ward Association in Milwaukee. Established in 1976, the Historic Third Ward Association acts as a catalyst to guide the Historic Third Ward district as an innovative, livable, and exciting mixed-use neighborhood while preserving its historic and creative character.
In addition, I have written for Ladies’ Home Journal, Trivago, Milwaukee Magazine, Wisconsin Bride and many more.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
While I wouldn’t necessarily call it a resource, I wish I would have realized earlier in my career that you can create the job you want.
Because I have a unique skill set that runs the gamut from writing to fashion to marketing, PR and and event planning, I used to struggle applying for job. One position would highlight a few of my strengths, but not the others, and vice versa. I started feeling like a jack of trades, but master of none.
Soon, I was blazing my own path, utilizing all my skills (and learning some new ones, too) and manifesting the career I knew was right for me. That was life changing.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
That’s easy: I never burn a bridge.
Don’t get me wrong, I have had less-than-pleasant experiences in my career with individuals and companies I would never again work with or for. But I am careful not to poison the well. The fact that they will never again benefit from working with me and utilizing my time and talents is how I handle a negative situation.
I also nurture my relationships. I smile, I encourage, I stay in touch and support the people and businesses who support me. That goes a long way.
