We were lucky to catch up with Jordan Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I wish I had started my creative pursuits earlier in my life but my parents immediately squashed any idea of being an artist or working for gaming or comic book companies. In their defense they weren’t wrong because it WAS the 90s but if I had went down that path id be further ahead.
On that same coin I’d like to point out that my current path could have easily saved my life, who’s to say that I would have been at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people had I started earlier?
I prefer to lean on the positive and think my path although semi late was the healthiest and most effective path. Having said that I do wonder what would have happened if I had started working with artists and creatives in my teens as opposed to my late 20s.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I initially wanted to make waves in the gaming industry with the thought of creating a studio dedicated to making awesome games across multiple genres featuring black characters across the African Diaspora.
At 19 I got a job as a writer for a video game company and quickly got promoted to director of community manager after showing my aptitude for content and digital marketing. My father had pushed me towards marketing and sales in my early teens so that skillet actually finally served me well.
After learning the ins and outs of digital marketing (Facebook Ads, content creation, growth hacking, email marketing, Google Ads, YouTube Ads, Funnels, etc.) I wanted to have my own agency helping black entrepreneurs and creatives.
In the back of my mind I thought I’d make enough money to one day start my own publishing company but I put that dream on the back burner and chased financial gain with my new skills.
I quit my corporate job and started my digital marketing agency in 2016 and after hitting a brick wall of unhappiness despite solid finances I seriously considered my path.
It took me spiraling down from several funerals including my father’s, getting divorced, car getting repossessed and hitting rock bottom to get therapy and finally realize that I wasn’t pursuing my dreams but money.
2019 I recovered 100% and out my sights firmly on founding a creative publishing company that develops original intellectual properties while also helping equip artists, entrepreneurs and content creators with the skills and tools they need to compete, fuel their vision and build multiple streams of income.
I’m most proud of the fact that I turned my life around and can be an inspiration and cornerstone of support for the people in my community that I network with. My biggest achievement so far is building a team of talented individuals that are with me and my company Black Light Visions LLC for the long haul. They stuck with me through the pandemic and to this day they have my back in all of our pursuits. Building this team is my biggest prize in this world and from this only greatness follows.
We’re unique because we put collaboration first and attack the marble slab from different angles with nothing but positive intentions. Whether you need editing, artwork, consulting, strategy or an entire intellectual property brought to life we have a team of dedicated artists, writers and creatives ready to make it happen.
We will also be hosting events, workshops, webinars all suited for networking and skill building.
Right now we have 4 properties in development and I look forward to attending conventions next year to debut the work we’ve done.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When the pandemic hit it threw our remote studio into disarray because everyone’s life changed but I was able to maintain a semblance of order through example and discipline and reassured the team that the storm would pass (as they all do).
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The mission of sitting my company down at the round table for black animation and comic creators with no need for competition and everyone knowing we seek to uplift and help those within our network. Our vision is a vast landscape filled with multiple creatives and entrepreneurs learning and growing from one another’s efforts.
