We were lucky to catch up with Jordan Danielle recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
When I was in high school, I had a photography teacher named Bill Kovnat. He taught me skills that I never knew I could achieve and made me look at photography as a profession rather than just a hobby. Who would’ve thought he would recognize something in me and decide to hire me? Bill took me under his wing when I was 18 and fresh out of high school. He also introduced me to his wife, Chrissy, who is his sidekick and business partner. My first job with Bill was working a wedding and it was incredible to see him in action. He is one of the most charismatic people I have ever met and draws in a crowd like no other. He never misses a shot, whether he is on the floor or up on a ladder; that man is getting the photo. And Chrissy has become more than a boss to me–she has become a true friend. Her talent in editing is unmatched and her way to get creative behind the camera is fun and unique. Aside from her talent, she is someone I can talk to about anything and everything. They are a dynamic duo that has been a huge influence throughout my career and I am forever thankful for their leadership and friendship.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I was 11 years old, my grandmother gave me my first film camera—a Canon point and shoot. A few silly shots with friends later and I was instantly hooked.
Fast forward a handful of years and lots of experimenting later, I attended Drexel University for photography where I met incredibly talented people and truly learned to hone my craft. I was fortunate enough to work under the guidance of some of the most impressive photographers–teaching me to push and cross boundaries I never knew possible. One professor, Stuart Rome, encouraged me to delve into my fantasy land and create work that to this day, still remains some I’m most proud of. Years after graduation, another one of my amazing professors, Paul Runyon, hired me to photograph his wedding. Out of all his previous students, he chose me. To date, it has been one of the greatest honors of my career.
And here we are today—I run my business, Jordan Danielle Photography out of Philadelphia. I’ve had the privilege of shooting around the country for everything from luxury brands to corporate events to my best friend’s Christmas Card.
I feel what sets my style apart is the distinct and thoughtful use of color and lighting. I don’t shy away from vibrancy and contrast. I have even been known as “the contrast queen” to a select few. As far as what sets me apart as a photographer, and what I’m most proud of, is my ability to connect with others. I don’t look at a “job” as just a “job.” Every one is different, but they’re all special to me for an important reason: I get to be part of people’s milestones, moments, and magic. And even more so, bring each unique vision to life.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to feel proud of my work and want others to share that pride. I think as a creative, there’s nothing more fulfilling than when your client is excited about what you have produced.
I am still a small, growing business and there are so many goals I have set for myself. Professionally, there are a lot of publications that I’d still love to do work for. I think that’s what drives my journey. I am manifesting it now: One day I will shoot for Playboy!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The ability to do what you love everyday and be creative is the most rewarding feeling. I am so lucky to have the opportunity to play and have fun with my work. Getting to see my clients come out of their shell in front of the camera is such a privilege. I love making people feel their most beautiful and special!
