Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jordan Ching. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jordan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on is actually something that’s still in progress… my first feature documentary! El Turista Imaginario.
A friend and now business partner, Cormac, approached me and said, “We have to tell this story!” It is the story of Luis Martinez, a Cuban poet, community elder, and mentor who travels the world through his mind and pen but has never been further than 100 miles from his hometown.
We started working on the project two years ago during the pandemic. After a year of skyping and learning Luis’s story, Cormac, myself, and a small crew headed to Cuba to meet and film Luis. I had already fallen in love with Luis through Skype, but meeting him in person was something else! (Mind you, I don’t even speak good Spanish, so language is often a barrier.) His eyes emit wisdom and his smile warms your heart. He has this energy about him that makes you want to stay and hang out. Also, setting foot in Cuba, you are somehow transported back in time. Maybe it’s the old cars or the horse drawn carriages… maybe it’s all of it.
I fell in love with Luis and his story because he is a living proof of the power of your mind and imagination. He’s never traveled further than 100 miles from his hometown, yet somehow he describes foreign lands and obscure towns with such accuracy, it blows tourists from those places away. He travels through different times in history and falls in love in Rome.
Luis doesn’t hop on google for this information… he talks to people and reads books and learns. His life and his lessons are such great reminders of that you don’t always need the latest technology to obtain knowledge. Sometimes a little curiosity and an open mind can go a long way.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jordan and I’m a CEO, director, and writer from the Bay. I fell in love with the camera while living abroad and that love has evolved into an affinity for storytelling, films, and all things creative. The first time I stepped foot on set, I knew this was what I wanted to do. Since then I’ve founded four companies and have been steadily honing my craft as both a director and writer. To say the process of growing as both an entrepreneur and creative is challenging would be a gross understatement (haha), but I honestly wouldn’t change anything for the world.
Flipbird Films is my newest baby and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished in a few short years. We birthed this during the pandemic and have been growing ever since. My crew is the BEST… everyone contributes their super powers to the work and it’s quite amazing to witness. We specialize in storytelling, design, and strategy and apply that to all things visual. I’m really looking forward to releasing the projects we’ve been developing behind the scenes… ya’ll are in for a treat!!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’m personally driven to create and tell beautiful stories that inspire hope and diversify the narrative. I believe that art and films have the power to shift perspectives, open minds, and soften hearts. There is so much craziness in our society today that I want to do my part to offset that and birth things that give people peace. I’ve become a new auntie in the past few years, and when I see these little pure souls full of light coming into this world, I want to make sure they have a good place to grow up!
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met my best friend and business partner through one of my good friends in college. Zo is actually the reason I am even apart of the creative world. I lived abroad in both China and Argentina, and when I came back he told me that I took good pictures. He brought me into another start up media company and that is when I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. There are no artists in my family, so diving into the arts was a derivative. We eventually met Mike through our last company and he has been our Zen at Flipbird when things get crazy. I met our last but not least partner, Young, during a project for Philz Coffee. Young has been the operational kick in the butt that all us creatives need once in a while =)
