We were lucky to catch up with Jordan Chambers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jordan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
I began years ago at a website writing news pieces for the games industry. It wasn’t an experience that thrilled me too much, however the passion was always there. I decided to continue in solo ventures making videos and other social media content regarding video games. I’ve stuck to things mainly retro and branch out on occasion, but the beginning process was ultimately made after my collection began to grow. I visited yard sales where dedicated people were looking to rid themselves of their old pieces of hardware. With each console, game, or magazine I bought gave me a mountain of content to create. Since then I’ve amassed a sizable collection and have endless amounts of content to make with it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am essentially a content creator who began as a video game journalist. I started years ago after creating my own blog and writing about the games I enjoy, reviewing them after completion and detailing my feelings on them. From there I was discovered by a few video game blogs and sites that I began to write opinion and news pieces on. It really was that straightforward, and honestly I do believe that the work you put in is indicative of the recognition that the average professional will take notice of. In this life, you don’t get what you deserve, you get what you take. Moving forward, the entertainment I enjoy providing whether it be photography, videos, reels, or my own personal podcast are all very special to me. I’ve learned very much as time progressed that you need to be enjoying what you do. Don’t allow things like algorithms and vitality to stand in the way of your enjoyment of your own content.
It’s a highly disciplined position to be in. When making your own stuff, you’re not clocking in and out of a job. If you’re not constantly creating and planning you aren’t going to have the best experience or grow organically.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
To be transparent, the follows. It sounds strange, and almost ego-driven but hear me out. I enjoy amassing more and more followers because it’s more and more opinions and conversations to be had. I am an EXTREMELY sociable person. As a result, one thing you’ll always find on my videos or social media posts is the constant call-out for other peoples opinions. I want my work to drive conversation, whether it’s agreed or disagreed with the subject matter. I always strive to hear other people out and gain new perspectives on what’s happening in the games industry, in technology, in hardware, in game development. And those conversations, for better or worse, are rewarding to me for having created the conversation and got people talking because I posed a question of intricacy or intrigue,
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There was a long period in my life where I was on and off creating content. Aside from a bit of an ADHD struggle, I was stuck in this vicious cycle of not being able to understand the difference between creating content that I enjoy and creating content that placates to an audience. I wasn’t being me, I was trying to find with the next viral sensation was and capitalize off of it. I wasted a lot of time asking myself “What are people going to like and enjoy” instead of worrying about what all most successful Contant creators worry about, “am I enjoying myself?” Very rarely does a content creator appear with the intention of getting millions of views and millions of dollars and actually succeed in that venture. It just doesn’t happen. I look at my favorite creators, people on YouTube, and Podcasters and I think to myself “they’re not doing this to become a millionaire. They’re doing it because it’s what they want to do and have fun doing so.”
