We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jordan & Barry Slocum Bordelon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jordan & Barry below.
Jordan & Barry, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Seven months into dating, we purchased our first home together, a Brownstone in Brooklyn, and decided to renovate it. We catalogued our experience in the form of a blog, and soon, we had a decent sized online following who were asking us what to do in their own homes. From there, we left our full time jobs to become full time business owners. We started taking on clients in New York and beyond, designing and renovating homes of all kinds. Then, our digital business started picking up, and soon, we were both full time designers and full time content creators. We’ve done campaigns with all sorts of brands, from Farrow & Ball to HGTV and just about everything in between. Though it’s at times felt overwhelming, this incredible amount of growth in a relatively short time, we’ve always had each other to lean on, and together we know we are capable of anything. Now, nearly eight years later, we’re married, have twelve projects currently in progress, published a book, and are getting ready to go to the HGTV dream home next month. This business has become more than we ever imagined, and we’re looking forward to how we will continue to grow.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Our names are Jordan and Barry, and we’re a Brooklyn-based couple who restores and renovates historic homes. Our business was born from sharing our very first renovation on our own Brooklyn Brownstone, and from there, we became both designers and digital creators. What sets us apart from other designers is our passion for restoration. We believe in saving old houses and the character and charm wrapped up in each one. Our clients most often hire us to give old homes new life and blend classic with modern styles to create functional, beautiful spaces. We’re most proud of our association with the restoration community, because it speaks to our passions for history, preservation, sustainability, and innovation. We’re honored to help homeowners uncover and bring new life to the treasures within historic homes, and to share it with our online community!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Our biggest piece of advice to anyone looking to build an audience online is to be consistent and authentic. Get yourself on a schedule for content creation and posting that is realistic but still challenging–it’s not easy to grow an audience! Find out what your audience tunes into most about what you do, and amplify that! We began with our blog, and committed to posting weekly about the progress of our home. Now, with over 200K Instagram followers, we post three times weekly and focus on restoration content like wood stripping, original details, and design reveals. Find out what your audience likes, do what you like, and then do it consistently!
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
One thing we do on a weekly basis for both clients and followers are our daily renovation stories on Instagram. We post updates of what’s happening at each project, to keep our followers engaged, but also to let our clients know what’s happening at their properties! These stories have been such a great way to bridge communication between our business and bring people into the process of renovation with us.
