We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jonny Lurie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonny, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The process of learning music is a lifelong process. What I have learned so far has been a combination of many things from self teaching to lessons to gigging experience to YouTube, learning songs by ear etc. I could have sped up the learning process by understanding what were the most relevant and important concepts for what I do as a musician. That being said, all the divergences etc got me to where I am today, and I am thankful for everything. The most essential skills for each person vary and really depend on what your goals are because music is so vast and there are many different paths you can take..

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a musician based in the Austin Texas area. I am a solo artist with music released under my name Jonny Lurie. I play live all over Texas solo, with my band, and with various other groups. I’m a guitarist, bassist, songwriter and producer.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
There is no one particular goal driving my creative journey. The great thing about it is that it’s a lifelong process and that the joy is in the journey and in the creative process.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society tends to idolize the superstar artists who made it to the big time and also look down on the struggling artists. Both can be damaging and people should realize that everyone is just a person at the end of the day. Neither above nor below anyone else.
