We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jonny Demon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jonny , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Originally my business partner Alexei had been talking about wanting to start making some beard care as a more affordable way to take care of himself, and I mentioned a casual interest in it as well since I was tired of paying high prices for quality product. A couple weeks later, he had come up with an oil and balm in two scents, and when I came to smell one of them I was immediately in love with it so much I asked how I could help blow this up haha He had made a great smelling orange cream and sweet coffee cinnamon and I couldn’t give him money fast enough. From there we started talking about doing more and I helped with a few things to get going, he already had a name and vision, I have just been helping it all come real.
Jonny , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We originally set out wanting to provide higher quality products at more affordable pricing, knowing how much things are marked up in personal care industry. We had a quality oil blend, made a few quality products with it, and kept everything to the highest possible quality we could find, while keeping pricing on par with average prices in the markets. In the last three years we have expanded to a very full line of personal care items that now includes our oil blend, a hair and beard balm, a body/beard/tattoo butter, tattoo balm for healing new tattoos, tattoo soap for cleaning new tattoos, scented soap to match our line of items, sugar scrubs, and bath bombs.
We aimed to keep all of our products and scents relatively unisex so that everybody could try us out, our products are good for general skin care, tattoo after care and maintenance, and beard care, with scents like orange cream, coffee cinnamon, a cedar pine fir, and a vanilla rose being our top scents.
We strive to provide quality care with quality ingredients that last a while and don’t break the bank to take care of yourself.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Very early on in starting this company we were mainly a beard care focused brand. After a little market research and customer feedback we found that our products had many more uses for women than men did for their beards, and rebranded our line to be unisex and quality care for everyone. Our oils and butters make great hair and skin care, full of healthy vitamins and nutrients that help stay healthy in dry areas like Denver.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
We originally started this right as covid was gearing up. We started selling through Facebook at the end of 2019, and launched our website in December of 2019 just a couple of months before the government shut the whole country down and put a lot of people out of work. We were able to maintain the business a little online, with very low overhead and low costs to really maintain we got by. We had to promote online as much as possible, often at the mercy of slow shipping, but kept pushing through until things started to open up again. As the world started to open up more this last two years we have been able to get out and do different markets and live events like concerts where we set up a table with our full line available in person for people to smell and purchase.
