We recently connected with Jonnie Morris and have shared our conversation below.
Jonnie, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning what I do now, as a professional music artist, all came naturally to me. The ability to listen to a beat and perfectly structure it with words by chorus and verses, all just felt extremely divine and purposeful. To speed up this learning process though, I definitely could have began recording music a lot earlier, as I didn’t begin until I was 20 years old. The most essential skills I believe that were key in bringing it all together, was the ability to listen, imitate and adapt. To listen to an artist such as Eminem, who started it all for me, imitate his flow and cadence and then adapt into my own sound and lane, was critical. The biggest obstacle that stood in the way from being able to learn more was finances, or the lack there of them. This inability early on to generate funds led to me relying more on practice, writing songs and learning song structure, versus bringing it all together over a beat with consistency in an actual recording studio.

Jonnie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Sure, my name Is Jonnie Morris, and I am a Music artist in various genres such as Rap and R&B. I first fell in love with music at the young age of 5, roughly right after my father, Jonnie Keith Morris passed away. It would be artist such as The Notorious BIG and DMX that I’d listen to passionately that kept my spirits high, but it was not until I heard my first Eminem song titled, “Lose Yourself” that I knew, Music is what I am here to do. I began writing around the age of 11, and took the craft serious at 14. However, it wouldn’t be until the age of 20 that I’d record my first song, and the rest is history. To date, I have a total of 27 songs out publicly – 3 projects, “it’s Beautiful and all good” “Jonnie, Be Good” and “Dreams from the Bottom” and 8 singles. I believe that my music predominantly heals all whom listen to it, through stories of my own personal sacrifices, self perceived failures, loss and success through it all, in a often times aggressive and braggadocious manner, and that in itself sets me apart from the competition. I am extremely proud that I never gave up, and till this day and beyond, have the fortitude, foresight and faith to know unshakably that I won’t ever do so.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Great question, I had to unlearn a common mistake that we are all taught, and that’s to work extremely hard to attain all that your heart and soul desires. See, should you work, “consistently”? Absolutely. It’s in that mode or zone, that you learn what works and to continue with it, and or learn what doesn’t and remove it in order to continue to find and cultivate what does. I struggled many years because of this mindset, believing that I needed to be a vigorous lone wolf, who never asked for help and believed that it should be all done alone. The key is to believe you have what it takes and set out on your path, but to have the humility to recognize the right help you’ve attracted and ask them to assist you on your journey. Working hard for someone else’s job does not create abundance for you, so instead you should work “smart” and use the funds it provides to first take care of yourself and responsibilities, and some of the rest to attain your goals. It is in this process, this flow of life, that you attract your deepest desires to you, as what’s meant for you is already yours and will never pass you.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
There absolutely is. See, I know that I am here for a very special reason, I know that I am chosen to do great things. The biggest thing I believe that I am here to do is help shift the collective consciousness of humanity, into their true nature and the power they hold within to change the world with their light too. With each word conveyed in my songs, every vibration felt from the beats I select to lace them over, you’ll heal and become who you’re meant to be. The most beautiful part about this, is that with this knowledge I still get to provide this energy to all of my supporters and listeners, in a fun and electric way. Life truly is a trip.
