We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jonna Wilson . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jonna below.
Jonna, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
I initially started face painting for my ‘real’ job at an annual Halloween festival and also at church fall festivals. A fiend and mom asked if I’d face paint at her daughter’s birthday and it had never crossed my mind to do something like that. She wanted to know what I charged so that is what got me to researching the business of face painting. Up until this point, I had only face punted using supplies people had provided for me. I had no idea the variety and quality of supplies available! I’ve always been thankful she asked me to do it because that is when I really began to learn the extent to which I could make some extra money.

Jonna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I now take pride in the quality service and supplies that I provide for parties, events and theatrics. The products I use are safe and I take time to keep a clean and sanitary work environment. The products available also allow me to do quick yet beautiful work at birthday parties that have a wow factor! People often ask if I will do simple art so I can get to more kids—they don’t realize the extent to which the products allow me to create something special-fast! I can always add more with glitter and bling too!

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Once I decided to make an investment in the face painting business, I knew I had to get my name out there in order to make it worthwhile. I did t have extra income for advertising so I am thankful for The Denton Community Market where I was able to share my talents on Saturday mornings, face painting only for tips, and meeting new people and families! That’s where I really was able to take off and build a social media following and book parties. I did this for about two seasons. Families from my church and school were also integral in helping spread the word about my service.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love meeting new people and seeing the face of my clients when they look in the mirror at the finished design! Making an income doing something fun and enjoyable is pretty cool! I got to be a part of the theatrical makeup team for ‘Cats’ at Denton’s local theatre. That was a pretty great accomplishment for me! The fact that someone had seen my work and would even ask me was pretty rewarding!
