We recently connected with Jonez Cain and have shared our conversation below.
Jonez, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is “Fruitvale Station”. Most recently an audio book I wrote titled “17” co-written by Amber “AL” Sandifer. “17” is loosely based on true life events focused on PTSD due to sexual assaults the lead character Naiomi endured. Unresolved trauma will always resurface we get to see how Naiomi overcomes her adversity with re-alignment with Jesus. There’s also a #metoo aspect to the films storyline. “17” is something new we have coined it as “Gritty Gospel”.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
What sets me apart is my motive of service. It wasn’t always to serve and heal, In the beginning I was in it simply for the love of it.
Bears on a Ship stars Derek Crowe (The Longest Run), Jo’nez Cain (Fruitvale Station), Sherill Quinn (Strings Attached), Derrick Hogan (Kendrick), Krystal Shay (Slashlorette Party), Ray Ruiz (Fire on the Ridge),Jose Padilla (Ghettobusters), David Jon Foster(Reanimation Team), Christopher Wilson (Venom Coast), Sam Aper(Worth), Matt Fuentes (Hunting Season), Nick Ryan (The Ride), Mike Grayson (The Dirty), and Arturo Rangel (A Couple’s Betrayal).
Here’s an article about the film.

I recently was blessed to give back to community I grew up in, “Hunters Point in San Francisco, CA. Farah Dews casted me in the film “Hood Pretty”. Hood Pretty is based on the Welterweight Champion Raquel Miller. “Hood Pretty” will screen in multiple cities around the US partnering with local non-profits.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew more about grants for the arts. I’m just learning and submitting.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
During the pandemic I had to pivot. At the time I was afraid and was being stretched but it birthed my new journey. During the shut in I co-wrote the script “17” with “AL” then I converted it into a book. I discided to do it afraid and so far this pivot or detour God has me on has been rewarding. God did not create the spirit of fear.
Oddly enough as I was comfortable with the pivot three features films have been released. Now on several major streaming sites, “Look Into the Fire” starring Greg Henry and Jackie Dallas, “The Dirty” starring Vivica A. Fox and Miguel Nunez Jr. and “The Death of Us” produced by Ahku, Yonash Breneman and Dana Schick. This industry is like a butterfly, you must stop moving for it to land on you.
