Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jonbonnet Levy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jonbonnet , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?
It all started back in 2018 when I left high school, mental wise I was not up to par I used to miss out on events, never wanted to be seen at the family gatherings, I had no friends simply because I had a hard time finding people who shared similarities with me I was always quiet and dismissive and it all sprung from not being able to grasp all my studies at school. Fast forward 2 years later I started working at a crystal store and there was something about that store, a sense of relief whenever I walked in. My sister somehow showed interest in them and that’s how we got closer as her business is based on healing, she introduced me to measures to exercise so I could start working on my well-being and it changed my life. I started finding myself, exploring new positive hobbies that later became a lifestyle and my motivation sprung like blooming flowers. There are really no words to express how appreciative I am of her and her efforts to help me find my purpose and I’m here now to tell my story.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Jonbonnèt Levy, I am 21 years of age I grew up in a small community in the grassy hills of Jamaica where we are rich in our culture I spent most of my days with my grandparents, especially my grandma from whom I’ve drafted my personality, discipline, and patience I always looked forward to Sunday’s with her as she would hand me the opportunity to help choose and prepare dinner with her after church and that explains my love for cooking now. I consider myself very goal-oriented, optimistic, and fun to be around among other positive traits. I am currently working on my cookbook, “Jonbonappetite ” which I will publish in January 2023. on a weekly basis, I would interact with my viewers and have them choose what they would love for me to prepare next as I notice they’re drawn to my work and would love to learn. I have never been so passionate about something in my life the way I am about food and cooking looking back at how far I’ve come gives me, even more, push to keep going and it will only get better, my goal is to publish my book and blow the minds of millions, yes I said millions of people out there and though opening a restaurant may be most people’s dream I live for that dream every day.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
At the age of 20, I had made my mind up to be a part of the food industry, though I have a lot to learn. I came up with multiple ideas to showcase my skills some of which would include cooking on YouTube, Instagram, Tik Tok and selling lunch boxes in my home town. I had noticed that the support was next to nothing, I was taken by surprise by some remarks that were passed by friends and a few family members. I had to unlearn valuing opinions that did not value my true potential and focus my attention on the select few of persons who cheered me on. For instance my sisters both older and younger, play very important roles in my life and helped me to realize my potential was way more than I had measured. Life is short if we spend most of our days valuing others opinions on why “we shouldn’t” we will only live to regret never to appreciate.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
My side hustle has definitely transitioned into my main career path, After taking some time to condition my mind to take the big step and put myself as well as my work out into the world that was when “Jonbonappetite” was introduced.I am currently working on publishing my cookbook and my aspirations include opening my own restaurant. Jonbonappetite started 2 years back where on weekends I would prepare a menu to sell lunch boxes and promote it on Instagram and the nostalgia from the first day having seen the amount of orders I got brings me joy and it is funny because my skills weren’t as sharp then as it is now but I made the bold step and did it anyway, though this only lasted for three weeks I knew there was going to be better things ahead so I took some time off to work on bettering my skills, reading and watching a lot of videos and all the hard work and determination has gotten me to where I am now.
