We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jonathon Carranza. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jonathon below.
Alright, Jonathon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always has a passion for bbq, as a kid growing up in South Texas, my dad would have the bbq pit going almost every weekend.
The idea of Meat Shack Barbeque started in late 2019, we primarily wanted to be a private event caterer/BBQ Trailer. Unfortunately due to covid, we were forced to shut down the catering.
Faced with the tough choice of putting my dreams on the back burner or pressing on we decided to gear towards our BBQ Sauces, BBQ Rubs and Hot Sauc

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Meat Shack Barbeque is a direct result of my love of traditional South Texas backyard bbq.
We use ingredients not typically found in traditional bbq sauces, bbq rubs and hot sauces.
One of things I am most proud of is when a customer sends me a message and a photograph of what they are cooking up using our products.
We’re a small family owned business, I am extremely passionate about what we do. My wife gives me a hard time because I tend to talk way too much about bbq.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Coronavirus was life changing for everyone. My dream of being a private event caterer was gone in just a few months.
I was raised to never give up, I have the words Strength and Courage tattooed on my forearms those are words I live by every day.
Once we had time to process everything I made the decision to start bottling and selling our bbq sauces that snowballed into us now having over eight different products with more in the works.
Strength and Courage!

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
We are in five Farmers Markets/ Makers Markets across the Austin Texas area.
Being at these events let’s me talk directly to our customers and build relationships with them.
I give people my personal number all the time and tell them to call me if they have any questions on how or what to use our products on.
I make sure our customers can reach me through social media, email or phone call.
