We were lucky to catch up with Jonathon Alexander recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathon, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I think I kinda wish I’d thought of it more at least. I always did art as a hobby but I got the ol “art doesn’t pay the bills” schtick a lot growing up so I never really considered it as a career path. I tried oil painting in the pandemic while I was in another dead end job. It really resonates with me and I started to consider it as a path forward the more dissatisfied I got with my job. Anyway, long story short, I wish I had started earlier but I think I started exactly when I needed to.
Jonathon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jonathon Alexander, I’m an oil painter living in Denver. I started oil painting in like May 2020 and I paint a little of everything. I would categorize my style as realism with impressionist edges. I focus heavily on the details of the subject and get messier as you get further from the subject. As far as stuff that sets me apart is concerned, I think I do a great job with people and they are my favorite thing to paint. When I get commissions, usually it’s for people. I mix in heavy color you might not expect would be present and I think that does a lot to give something a nice inner glow, particularly skin tones.
I wouldn’t say people come to me with problems per se but if they have a particular request for a commission I will try my best to make it happen. If someone comes to me, I generally want them to feel like it was a great experience working with me and that they were included in the journey.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think they’re a scam. I actually keep getting messages asking me to mint my traditional media paintings on the blockchain and I just… why wouldn’t you buy the original then?? I don’t get it. All in all, I think the whole thing is quite silly.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Buy art from human artists.
