We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jonathan Solorio . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jonathan below.
Hi Jonathan , thanks for joining us today. Do you manage your own social media?
Social media can be a great way to build your brand and connect with your audience. I generally manage my own social media presence, but sometimes I hire experts to help out with particularly time-consuming or difficult projects. Part of my social media plan is defining a brand voice and tone that is consistent across all platforms. Once I have the voice down, I can write up a social media calendar of posts and edit them in advance so they are ready to go when it’s time to publish.
Trends are constantly changing, so it is important to stay on top of what’s happening in social media. I use a variety of tools to track trends and monitor what’s working for others within my industry. Google Trends, BuzzSumo, and Social Mention are all great tools for this. I also like to keep an eye on Instagram’s Explore page, which shows trending hashtags, locations, and accounts.
Running social media ads is also a cost-effective way to grow your following. You can target people who are interested in your niche and promote posts that get the most engagement. This will help you grow organically while also increasing brand awareness with new followers.
Perhaps one of the most important things to do is to stay true to yourself. You can learn from other people’s successes, but a one-size-fits-all approach rarely works. When I first started my social media accounts, I tried imitating what others were doing and it felt forced. Now that I have defined my brand and determined a strategy for communicating it to my audience, the voice I use reflects this clarity.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jonathan, and I’m a photographer based in San Diego. Since I was a child, photography has been one of my greatest passions. I was born and raised in Poway and graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 2019. Currently, I am a student at The California State University of San Marcos; where I’m working toward my bachelor’s degree in psychology.
I have photographed everything from high school soccer games to weddings, as well as daily life in San Diego. In addition to my work as a portrait photographer, I have shot for various sports teams in San Diego County. My photographs have been used on websites, in advertising campaigns, and at art galleries.
My best piece of advice for people who are just getting started in photography is to just go out and do it. Don’t be afraid of failure, and don’t let the internet tell you what a good picture is supposed to look like. Learn from your mistakes and keep trying new things until you find something that works for you.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to capture those once-in-a-lifetime moments is what keeps me going as a photographer. When I am shooting at a wedding or quinceañera, I never know how the day will unfold, or what kinds of little details are going to stand out when it’s time to edit photos later.
As a creative, I’m constantly inspired by new ideas and have the opportunity to experiment with different mediums. In photography, I can be adventurous with post-processing and editing—there are countless ways that I can tweak an image to make it my own. Sometimes when I’m taking a photo, I’ll even try out a technique that I’ve never used before just to see how it will turn out. Since photography is a visual medium, the possibilities are endless!

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
With endless tutorials and great advice from industry leaders, YouTube is the best resource for new photographers to learn from. I even started my own channel a little over a year ago to talk about my creative journey, share some of my favorite finds and just chat about life, photography, and business.
In addition to YouTube, I also love Canva. It’s a website that gives you access to templates and layouts for just about any design you can think of. With Canva, you can make your own holiday cards or create an Instagram feed for your business.
If you’re looking for some free photography inspiration, Pinterest is your best bet. There’s a whole section on Pinterest dedicated to photography with plenty of beautiful images to fuel your creativity.
